Hi,

I would like to switch my iBook G3 from linux 2.4 to 2.6.
Will there be something missing from 2.6.5 that I'm going to need?

Will my CPU fan start when is too hot?
Is my iBook going to sleep on low battery/lid close if I install
pmud/pbbuttonsd?
Is my radeon M6 supported? With DRI?
Are sungem eth and airport working?
Is there a working ALSA driver or I have to use the OSS one?
Have USB any issue?
Will HFS+ kernel module trash my OS X partition?
(Is UML going to work?)

Thanks for the support!

2.6.5-rc2-ben0 is working fine on my iBook G3. Didn't try airport though.

Andreas.

Apple Airport (*not* AirportExtreme) works like a charm with both 2.4
and 2.6 on my iBook G3.

With a patch on orinoco driver, you can even put it in monitor mode (eg.
to use airsnort and the like).

Airport should work on those models

Ben.

This should be hardware driven.

Yes

Yes.

Yes.

I'm not sure how well the Alsa driver will work, it works pretty badly
for me on the tipb 1Ghz, though the dmasound (oss) one works fine.

Not that I know

Heh, good question :) AFAIK, the 2.6 one won't, but I admit I don't it
much more than for reading MP3s out of my ipod ... :)

ALSA works better than dmasound on the same machine here... must be a
configuration issue on your end. :)

Really weird. I talked to the xine maintainer, and it really seems
like the "clacs" I hear duing DVD playback are caused by the Alsa
driver (though it does acheive better lip sync), while dmasound
has proper sound quality, but incorrect sync...

Ben.

I'll admit that I don't watch DVDs on my TiBook, so that's not part of
my testing. And xine indeed seems to trigger obscure bugs in ALSA. I
believe some have only been fixed for the upcoming 1.0.4 release.

I don't usually, but I felt it would be a good test :)

on a beige G3:
With a 2.6.3-based kernel, PREEMPT on (no idea if that matters), I hear
occasional glitches in the sound output, using xmms. It sounds like it's
playing some random piece of data in memory for maybe 0.2s. How often this
happens seems to be independent of system load. The alsa driver works fine
in 2.4, and IIRC also with 2.6.0 (without PREEMPT).

How do you hack the kernel? modify-compile-reboot?

preempt used to be broken on PPC until very recently, but I doubt it
would cause sound skips.

The xmms ALSA plugin is known to be completely hosed. I don't have any
sound skip problems with mpd, alsaplayer, ogg123, xine, rhythmbox, ...
