Has anyone successfully compiled and used the 2.1.131 kernel from
ftp.kernel.org? I downloaded it and compiled it without error, but when I
try to boot all I get is a black screen with the line "Welcome to Linux
kernel 2.1.131" or something like that. Nothing happens after this. I did
forget to compile and install the modules, but I don't think that would
cause the system to hang right off the bat. Any ideas on the problem?
Thanks,
Nathan

I have no ideas on the problem, but I can confirm that a 2.1.131 kernal,
without modules properly installed, will boot my 7500.
In fact, it's fairly functional (I used it for ~1 day, before I got a
chance to reboot and move files on the MacOS side.), so that's not your
problem.

I have a forgotten to install the modules on an older kernel, and that
worked fine. The kernel doesn't even seem to load far enough to need the
modules. I am not sure where to start to try figuring out the problem. It
just dies so early that I don't have any error messages or anything to
work with.

I have compiled with modules and use 2.1.131 from kernel.org for some time.
Didn't have to change anything in the config to make it bootable.

Comment out the line "SMP=1" in the make file.

yeah, I experienced problems with 2.1.131 also. with mine, I compiled
everything dep clean, vmlinux and then set it up, when I rebooted it would
get to where it checks the partitions, and for some reasons decides taht
my root partition is not ext2 (however, this works perfectly fine in
2.1.24) then it drops me into single user mode, and all it can mount is my
root partition (which it didnt think was good, go figure) maybe the
devices have new and different names or the partition naming scheme is
different. god knows,

Thanks to everyone that responded. This did the trick. Maybe next time
I'll read the docs first ;-)

For some reason, without commenting out the SMP=1 in the makefile, mine
would not continue to load the kernel. It would display the welcome and
then stop. After recompiling with this line commented out, everything
works fantastic.
