I recently installed LinuxPPC 1999 Q3, and today I ran out of inodes.
My 3G disk is only 67% full. It turns out my inode ratio is about
one inode per 32KB. The default for mk2efs is 4KB (-i 4096).
32KB seems extreme. Indeed, I see from the mailing list archive
that someone else ran into the same problem in September
(http://lists.linuxppc.org/listarcs/linuxppc-dev/199911/msg00047.html).
Hollis' reply hints that the installer does this on purpose, but
I couldn't tell for sure. Could whoever maintains the installer look
into changing the inode ratio to something lower, or is the 32KB ratio
intentional (but unfortunate)?
Now to find a big disk to back up to...

I don't suppose you used a more recent installer than what's on the CD? It's a
known problem, but obviously once it's on the CD all we can do is post updates
online...

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago, and the problem went away
when I reduced the size of the affected partition to be less than 2GB.
I assumed that perhaps some integer overflow problem occurred in
the math that computes the number of inodes, because that number
was ridiculously low.

Ah hah. Well, I know I can fix the problem by starting over*, but I'll
mke2fs the disk by hand, which should set the inode ratio at '-i 4096'.
I'll use tune2fs to check it before I install, to determine whether it's
a bug in mke2fs, or whether the linuxppc installer is "helping out" with the
inode count. (Hollis hinted in an emailed reply that it is a known bug in
the installer.)
By the way, kudos to the linuxppc development folks. I have been out
of linuxppc land for a while, and recently reinstalled afresh.
It has come a long way! It's a very pleasant setup.

The problem was in older X installers, which incorrectly interpreted pdisk's
output. It's since been fixed, so all users trying to install Q3 (so chances
are they'll never read this :( ) should download the new ramdisk (which
contains the newer installer) from ftp://ftp.linuxppc.org/install.
