[ANN] New kernels, gmac, airport, usb...

I've uploaded a new test kernel (2.2.17pre9-ben1) to the web page at

   <http://ppclinux.apple.com/~benh/>

This kernel contains all the various updates and fixes made since the
latest release, add some new stuffs like:

  - New USB backport from 2.4 (Suse latest backport)
  - New GMAC driver with support for multicast&promisc, better perfs, no
    longer corrupts memory
  - Changes to the ADB and USB Mac keyboard & mouse drivers (Franz Sirl)
    to handle the new Linux Input Drivers mecanism (see page for details)
  - Whatever I forgot ;)

On this page, you'll also find an Airport driver for the Apple Airport
card. It has been successfully tested with a Pismo powerbook, an iBook
and a G4 "Sawtooth". You need the latest kernel for it to work correctly,
and you should have this kernel's sources linked to /usr/src/linux in
order to compile it (it's downloadable in source form only). Useage is
similar to the wvlan_cs driver for the Lucent PCMCIA card, the interface
name is 'airport'.

WARNING: This kernel may contain bugs. I've made lots of efforts to avoid
that, but it's still possible that there are some. Please report me any
problem other than the "normal" mouse keyboard issues discussed on the
web page, and I'll get those fixed. Please test on your HW since I plan
to merge most (if not all) of those changes to the mainstream PPC kernel asap.

Is the airport driver based on the latest wvlan_cs?  Your page indicates that
WEP is not supported, although the latest wvlan_cs does appear to support WEP.

It is based on it, but AFAIK, WEB doesn't work with the Apple base
station. It should be possible to use WEB between two airports on linux,
but I didn't try. What I meant on the page was a quick explanation on how
to get it working with an Apple Airport base station.

If its actually supported, then I'll be glad to fix the page ;)

I'm still not completely awake, of course, you will have replaced all
occurences of WEB in my mail by WEP ;)

The card works fine between two macs and a mac & an airport base station
with WEP disabled. According to someone on the mailing list, using the
base station WEP requires knowledge about the Apple key distribution
mecanism, and we don't have this knowledge.

Bugger.  I was hoping to use my airport - but I don't think I'll be allowed to
turn off security on our corporate wireless net ;)

I wonder if apple would be willing to let this out??  Probably not...
Does MacOS X support WEP yet?  Perhaps I should have a look through there.

actually, if i understand the problem, the 'standard' driver wants to know
the 56-bit key in hex and apple generates this key using the text string
you supply (after passing it through using some hashing routine)

if you have an airport basestation (with 1.1 s/w or later) you can
see the hex string that is being used by choosing 'Network Equivalent
Password...' under the 'Base Station' menu in the airport admin utility.

I got it to work. There was an endian problem in the driver preventing
using of the WEP mode. It's fixed in version 0.9.2. I also added a module
param for the key so you don't need iwconfig to set it

BTW.  Got any good resources I can start with so I can learn my way around
this sort of thing (kernel/drivers/etc)?  Might mean I can help out in

What I do is to configure the station to accept only the HW MAC address
of my card.

MacOS X does have a driver but it's not open sourced.

Only problem here is that the traffic is still viewable by anyone, and it
probably isn't that hard to fake the the HW address...

	I apologize if this is a FAQ, but is there any chance that Airport can
work on IA32?  Or is this just on LinuxPPC on Powerbooks and iBooks?

The airport card is specifically for the newer powerbooks and the ibooks, so
you can't use that card.  You can however use a Airport base with a wavelan
card which is what the airport card is based on.

or for that matter any 802.11 compatible card (I have seen an aironet
11MBit card talking to an airport plugged into a vaio next to an ibook
also using the airport so it all works nicely), see
