Hey, I'm trying to put 1GB of ram in an Apple G4 box here, but I'm having
trouble.  Anything higher (well, in increments of 256M) is dumping me into
xmon early on boot (before the fbcons is initialized).

Any thoughts?  I'm unable to use xmon because of the USB
keyboard...unfortunately.  Too bad Apple didn't put a real serial port on
these machines :(

use mem= as argument, the highest mem I got was mem=703M.

So is it not (at this time) possible to use 1GB of memory on ppc?

No, 768MB is the maximum on chrp (B50), the newer PowerMacs can handle
only that 703M. I have no reports about oldworlds.

one would think that this is a linux limitation then?  Apple's store sells
G4s with 1.5G, so one would hope that at least macos could handle it.  For
some reason I doubt it can, but why would they sell machines with that much
memory?

Actually MacOS limits the amount availible to running apps as 999M.  I was
purchasing a G4 and read that on Apple's Website.  It was a while ago
and I don't remember if it was for OS9 or 8.X, though.

Current Apple G4 hardware can handle 2 GB (four 512MB DIMMs).  1.5 is
a MacOS limitation (and there's a further limitation in MacOS of
approx. 1GB per process or something like that).

Not yet ... 768 Meg is in theory the maximum. Hopefully in about 2 weeks this is
going to get fixed.
