Hi,

I'm looking to purchase a new BDM emulator. Does anyone have
suggestions. I've been using EST's for several years on the 68xxx
platform and have been very pleased with it. But, of course, the PPC is
not supported with my current model and they recommend upgrading to
visionProbe for support ($$$).

Thanks for any advice.

Kyle.

Sounds like time to upgrade to a BDI2000 (http://www.abatron.ch). For
your money you get a quality Ethernet JTAG probe with a telnet/GDB
frontend and the best support I have every received from any tools
vendor (HMI, EST, and Applied included).

Going EST buys you into the famous Windriver support vacuum. :)

Since you're asking in a Linux group, it is probably important that
you chose one that supports the MMU to allow Linux kernel and device
driver debugging.

At the moment I know of only one commercial product that integrates
well in a Linux environment: that's the BDI2000 by Abatron (see
www.abatron.ch). It provides boh a siple telnet interface (which is
useful for instance for image download or flash programming), and
also talks GDB remote protocol over the net, so you can attach easily
with GDB.

The other, non-commercial solution is MPCBDM or BDM4GDB as it's being
called today; see http://bdm4gdb.sourceforge.net/ .

Please let me know if you need more details.

Hope this helps,

I also bough one BDI2000 for PowerPc 82XX from Abatron,
the product is quite good, support works not only fix problems
but also to improve the product. For example I received frequent
firmware updates with new features (support for MMU, Linux kernel
image download). With DDD in control of the BDI box you get a great
graphical debugger.

Just another happy user

There's no content there though, which is why there's no pointer to it in the
HOWTO. Try the MPCBDM site at:
    http://www.vas-gmbh.de/software/mpcbdm/

This is the *old* project, which has seen major changes since.

I don't really understand this: both

	http://bdm4gdb.sourceforge.net/

[which introduces the BDM4GDB Interface Project] and

	http://sourceforge.net/projects/bdm4gdb/

[the "official" project home page] work fine for me.

Real programmers don't comment their code. It was hard to write, it
should be hard to understand.
