Hi,
Yesterday's 2.4.10-ben0 (Sat Sep 29 23:32:51 CEST 2001) kernel doesn't
see my ide1 device. Previous kernels had no problems. There's an
ide-pmac(ide): can't request IO resource
error.
I'm using the same (make oldconfig) kernel config for both kernels,
see below.
Greetings,
Jan.

Rack this up as an OF bug on some systems I think. I got it too (Wallstreet2/300). The OF IDE nodes request what look like twice memory as much as they need. Linux doesn't even use most of it anyway.
The two ide busses in my system have resources 0x10000 apart, while they both reserve a size of 0x20000 (IIRC). Since BenH's recent kernels reserve space based on OF, and then request it realistically, in this situation, it will fail on half of the resource allocation. Even though we don't use the overlapping area...
Quick fix? halve all the resource sizes of the ide nodes. (DMA's space also does this). I don't know what the long term fix would be.

Ok, thanks for figuring out what was breaking request_OF_node on
those machines, I didn't yet had a chance to look at it in more
details ;)
A "good" fix would probably be to fixup OF ranges early during
boot, but for now, I think just limiting how much memory is
requested will be enough.
BTW. Once that's fixed, does media bay works on lombard & wallstreet
machines with my new kernel ? I rewrote the media bay driver but
didn't yet have a chance to test it on anything but Pismo.
Also, Joseph, did you notice similar problem with other OF resources
ranges or is this specific to IDE ?
Ben.

I think this is specific to IDE. When it happened, I did a quick scan of the log for any other failures and found none. But this was with a kernel from a linux-2.4.10-pre10-ben0 from 2001.09.21. A recent linux-2.4.10-ben0-benh from 2001.09.29 seemed to work, but then the bottom fell out in the form of nothing could be found. Binaries couldn't be run, etc. (A few days before that, it couldn't mount root and panicked in boot.)
I'll see about testing one from today. I still have a nasty problem of ADB locking up at random. Sometimes 2 minutes after boot, once almost 24 hours after boot. Gotten it in the console and X, so I was thinking its either some corruption from the new video drivers (ATY-CT) or maybe some funky DMA race condition. Would the semaphore proposed in adb.c help this? PMU interrupts still get thru. remote login -> procinfo show things still good, battery status still updated (maybe).
Building kernel...

Interesting... what is the exact symptom ? trackpad and keyboard
not working any more ? I don't think the semaphore thing would
change as it's quite specific to the ADB probe sequence.
Do you get things back if you send ADB flush commands to the
trackpad and/or keyboard ? (You can do that from userland
via /dev/adb).
Ben.

Keyboard and trackpad no longer respond. No logged error message. System doesn't seem to notice anything happened. If I try to sleep the system (close the lid), it sets up, almost gets there, and aborts. Either something rejected the sleep request, or it did sleep but didn't really. Not sure which. rejection seems more plausable. And if I shut down after an attempted sleep, the kernel panics at the last moment. I had brute forced ability to ADB_RESET the bus, but that just oopsed the system like a sleep would.

Ok. I'll try that next time it happens.
Thanks.

Can you tell me more about the oops ?

The OF resource allocation wasn't a problem on Lombard for me - and media
bay (being handled separate from builtin IDE WRT enabling the interface)
worked with the stock source rsynced Friday afternoon. At least the IDE
probe was successful and the partition table could be read.

Ok. Forgot to mention, I've got a beige G3/233.

Thanks. I couldn't find it rightaway, but then changed:
