Well I am, but I have not seen this one before. With Ben's m3mirror and
corresponding ioctls, crt:1 did turn on the external display, it was just
not stable.
Could you please boot with external monitor plugged in at power on and
pass video=aty128fb:crt:1,lcd:1 as additional boot parameters?
cheers,

Well with your 2.4.15-pre7-ben0 the external monitor was working with my
TiBook. Worked quite well. I did not set the external monitor the same as the
LCD 'cause the refresh rates were different but I could turn on the external
and the LCD off and use the external quite well. So I can tell you that
worked.

I did as you ask.
When the machine booted I got this on the external monitor:
...ok
copying OF device tree...done
Initializing fake screen: ATY,RageM3p12A
Calling quiesce
returning 0x01400000 from prom_init
I saw a message concering quiesce before. Maybe this message was from you.
Sorry I did not keep it.
Once I started X The screen displays garbage but seems to change when I bring
up windows or change desktops. So something is out there. Looks like the
frame buffer is out of order or something? I don't know I am just guessing.
Thanks,
Ira

Ok, it's a side effect of initializing the second head from OF. Newer
kernel do that to make sure both heads are properly POSTed on all
cards, but that results in OF setting the card in 2 split heads mode
causing the simple tweak used by m3mirror to fail.
I'm afraid I won't fix this, we really need real support for the
second head for mirroring.
Ben.

One more thing I forgot to mention:
m3mirror crt:0 (and 1) will turn it off and on as expected.

Well I decided it was time to get up to date on my TiBook.
So I went out and bought a copy of Yellow Dog and got apt-get installed and
started hacking. After some switching pain I got it up and running but found
that I needed a newer kernel to get the networking stuff to work.
no problem... I rsync'ed Bens tree built and rebooted...
There are 2 problems.
1) My Microdrive which I had hacked in does not work any more. What is the
status of the ide-cs driver? Anyone know? It is different than when I got
it to work before and I am not sure where to begin again.
2) m3mirror does not work? This one really puzzles me. lcd:0 turns off the
LCD screen but crt:1 does not turn on the outside monitor. I rebooted into
Mac OS and the external port works. The only thing I can think of is that I
did use the S-video port on Mac OS to show some pictures. Is there
something in OF which Mac OS would set which would make the external port
not work with m3mirror?

As usual broken and hacking my kernel... ;-)

There are some problems with ide-cs currently. I'll try to work on it
this week-end.

Well... All it does is to enable the port by sending it the same signal
as the LCD. This works approx. well on the Pismo, but not with the tipb.
Somebody, I think, is working on proper mirroring based on setting up
the second CRTC.

You can always try and see whether this helps:

At the risk of sounding ignorant I have some more information about ide-cs.
I rebooted into 2.4.15 and noted the addresses which the driver uses to talk to
the card. I have also been able to print the address used in the new kernel
and they are the same address range. So I must assume that the machine check
is due to something not being set up in the PPC architecture?
What I don't understand is that there does not seem to be anything in
request_region which is PPC specific. I am sure I am missing something. I
don't know exactly what a machine check is but, I got this from a book I found:
The causes for machine check exceptions are implementation-dependent, but
typically these causes are related to conditions such as bus parity
errors or attempting to access an invalid physical address.
Why on the first kernel would this address be ok and on the newer version not?
I assumed there would be something in request_region, but I do not see anything
in there PPC specific or architecture specific for that matter.
I don't know if this helps but I am learning... ;-)
