Hello,
I know that there is a cheap simple IDE interface for the MPC8xx family
of processors that is supported in the kernel, I was wondering if
someone has come up with a similar one for the IBM 405?
If not could someone recomend a nice cheap IDE interface chip that
works well with ppc linux? (note performance is not an issue)
Thanks
Conn

You have PCI on the 405, so you have a huge variety of cheap IDE
controllers that will work. Look for some of the slightly older
Promise or CMD controllers from surplus suppliers, either should
work fine.

Hi Conn,
we attached a CompactFlash socket to the 405's external bus on our CPCI405
CompactPCI board. The board is directly supported by the linuxppc_2_4_devel tree.
The tree includes a driver for simple memorymapped CompactFlash cards.

Hello Matthias,
Actualy it was a quest for a compact flash interface that started me on
this IDE interface saga to begin with. I knew you could build an adapter
to access compact flash cheaply/easily.
Would it be posssible to give me ( or post ) a list of signal names of
what 405 signal connects to what compact flash signal in your interface?
I can understand if you say no.
Also was the compact flash connected dirrectly to the data and address
bus or did you need to buffer it in some way?

Just the fact that I now know it can be done is of great help.
Thanks

Hi,
We are looking for a compactFLASH driver for Linux which runs over a PPC750. The
device we are using is Hitachi's 128MB FLASH part no - HB28B128C8HSR. We are
planning to interface this directly without any IDE controller or PCMCIA interface.
How do we go about writing a driver for this ? Is there any standard driver available
for this ?
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks & Regards,
Nandan

Hi
For information, what is the cheap simple IDE interface for the MPC8xx
that you talk about ?
Thanks

Using the internal PCMCIA controller. All you need is bus drivers and
a trivial (2 gates) address decoder.

There is a way to hook up an IDE interface to the PCMCIA interface of
the Motorola 8xx family of processors. The code for controling it is in
the sourcefile /drivers/ide/ide-m8xx.c . I think that there is more info
on it in the PPCBoot/U-Boot source code.
Enough people are doing it that it made it in the kernel so there must
be documentation some where.
Hope this helps,
Conn
