Hi,

I have been trying to compile USB support into the 2.2.5 kernel on
LinuxPPC using the uusb driver.

On my LinuxPPC machine I keep getting errors that the struct s_snode
has no element named lock. I checked in usb-slist.h and this struct's
definition does not have an element named lock, nevertheless it is
referenced throughout the usb driver code.

If anyone has been able to comple the uusb driver on LinuxPPC, I would
appreciate some pointers. Also if there is a version of the usb
drivers that compiles with kernel 2.2.0pre6, I would like to use it,
since the SMP support on 2.2.1+ has been quite buggy for me.

Thanks,

Er, SMP uusbd? uusbd currently doesn't have all the locking requires for
SMP to work. Linus' simple USB code might work on SMP, but doens't have an
OHCI driver that works yet.

	I've used the 2.2.1 kernel from linuxppc.org
(/linuxppc/kernel/powermac/linux-pmac-2.2.1.tar.gz) that comes with USB
support patched into the kernel and in good working order. You could
probably patch the source up to 2.2.5 just fine.

You must be compiling an SMP kernel. The uusbd stuff doesn't support
SMP yet. You'll have to compile with CONFIG_SMP=n if you want to use
uusbd.

Paul.

I tried to make some simple patches to the uusb code to support
locking using the same locking strategy as the vmscan.c and other
kernel files, but there were too many things to fix.

Where can I pick up a copy of Linus's USB driver? It does not seem to
be included with my 2.2.5 kernel sources.

I am about to reveal my limited knowledge of USB, but what is the OHCI
driver and will I need it to use a USB mouse or keyboard?

Anyway, I wish I had the time to do a complete patch. I really would
like to get usb running on my 7600. But if it is a tradeoff between
SMP and USB, I'll pick 800 bogoMIPS over a three button mouse. :-)

It's in 2.2.7. But it does not have a OHCI controler (ie everything
that's not from intel).

It's the controller you plug your keyboard/mouse into. :)

Yeah, that's a bit of a shame..

2.2.7 standard kernel. Beware, though, you can't even enable it by
default. If I were you, I'd wait for 2.2.8. Additionally, the current
drivers are *very* experimental from what I hear, and there's little
guarantee it would work with your mouse for the current release.

Hi,

I'm using internal video on the 7600. I never had a problem with the
video but I have had other problems.

In order to get my SMP card (nPower 400) to work under MacOS I had had
to swap out the ROM simm (not sure what its real name is, but its
extra large sized simm) that was in my 7600 with one from an 8500.

A side effect of this is that I can only use boot-x with the "no video
driver" option unchecked for booting into linux. This is not really a
problem for me, since I never boot MacOS on my 7600.

As for SMP kernels, I have only been able to get 2.2.0pre6 with the
file vmscan.c backward patched to 2.2.0pre4 to boot into SMP mode
correctly. The 2.2.1 to 2.2.4 kernels don't boot at all in SMP mode,
they crash in kswapd. I haven't tried 2.2.5 yet, but from the traffic
on this list I will probably hold off for a little while.

I will put a gzip'ed kernel image on my web page later today and send
you the URL.

If it was the one in the middle of the RAM slots, that's the L2 cache,
and I assume it is, since the one in my 7600 didn't cooperate with the
my nPower400 card either. I didn't have anything to replace it with,
so I just took it out. I really should get a better one for
performance reasons, but I just haven't done it yet.

Do you always use BootX? I've never even tried it...

Well, that's definitely a different place than it crashed for me in
2.2.2 and 2.2.5, and I never tried more than a little at any of the
2.2.0pre kernels. Maybe I'll take a look and see what changed...

I fixed this problem around 2.2.5 or so. It's fixed in the current
vger tree and in the samba.anu.edu.au::linux-pmac-devel rsync
repository.

Paul.

I normally start Linux using BootX from within MacOS. For some reason
this seems to work better than using OF to boot. My guess is that the
nPower init or the MacOS init sets up the SMP card correctly.

The downside to this is that you need a MacOS partition. The upside
for me is that I finally found something to do with my old 250 MB hard
drive.

Try to download on of the images from the URL:

http://www.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU/~ranga/downloads/linuxPPC/kernels/

All of the images are the same. You should plain vmlinux, a gzip'ed
version and a sit.hqx version. As a warning, I will probably get rid
of the vmlinux image sometime next week since it is so large.

I don't have any modules, *almost* everything is compiled into the
kernel.

HTH,

I am picking this 8 weeks old thread up, because I didn't see any update
on this story. I have a couple of questions. Main question: What sources
are supposed to produce kernels working on B&W G3s?

Other form of the same question (this has been asked several times, but
I didn't see any answer, which IMHO contradicts somehow the open source
spirit): Which sources and which config options were used by the guys
who compiled the kernels for B&W G3s?

The reason why I am asking is that I am in the process of installing
LinuxPPC on a colleague's new G3/300. After getting over all the
problems with the buggy installer others are constantly complaining
about, we have R5 fully installed and running (no accelerated X so far),
but only with the help of an old ADB keyboard.

None of the kernels available on the net recognizes the USB keyboard and
mouse of this machine! By this I don't mean the problem with French
keymaps. The keyboard and mouse just don't give *any* reaction. This
starts with the redhat installer where you have to hit some button to
say "OK" first. Impossible with this USB keyboard. Hard reboot
necessary. Needless to say that it works under MacOS. Under MacOS, you
even can use 2 keyboards and mice (ADB and USB) at the same time.

So what I would like is to compile my own kernel for this machine in
order to try to get the keyboard recognized. In the vger sources, there
is a drivers/usb directory, and after some patching of some config.in
and defconfig files, it can be compiled in (not by default).

Question: Is this USB stuff supposed to work on Macs? I couldn't test
it, because the IDE driver in this kernel doesn't see the internal (and
only) hard disk of this machine. So it doesn't boot completely, because
the root filesystem is absent.

I saw a couple of kernel patches at yellowdog's, also for G3 IDE
drivers, but those seem to be for older kernel versions and it seems
impossible to apply them manually (I tried both 2.2.10 and 2.3.6 from
vger).

In the official R5 2.2.6 kernel sources, there is a uusb directory
containing quite different things compared to the vger drivers/usb
stuff.

Question again: Is this supposed to work on B&W G3s, and if so, with
what patches and config options? Is the IDE driver there supposed to
work on these machines?

Any help appreciated.

I think 2.2.10 from vger will now, and paul m put up his 2.2.10 tarball
which works as well. Keep in mind there is some "wacky" problem with the
new B&Ws.

The patches (which have been fixed up and included in vger now) which YDL
made are on their site, along w/ the dot.config.

Hmm. That is very odd. The Blue&White kernel supplied w/ R5 works on
mine, as does the 2.2.10 Paul put up. Give Pauls a shot..

USB in vger won't work. Paul's endian fixes aren't in yet (2.3.x or
2.2.x), so use his tarball.

B&W's need CMD646 and Pmac-ide suppoprt right now.

The 2.2.6 sources use Inkay's uusbd, which is now defunct.

I can't think of anything I forgot above.. :)

OK, we had some success now. It seems now that when we tried Paul's
2.2.10 kernel the first time, we downloaded it like any newbie in
fetch's 'automatic' mode with the result that it didn't even get to the
penguin. I tried again today, and now Paul's kernel works, USB keyboard
included. Very good feeling after 2 weeks of frustration.

All other kernels we tried didn't work. A vger-2.2.10 kernel I compiled
today did not get to the penguin, and the Blue-G3 kernels from
linuxppc.org as well as the YDL kernel work with an ADB keyboard, but
they don't see the USB keyboard.

Thanks
