Hi Everybody,

This mail has two purposes.  First of all Motorola
has finally got a web page for linux.  There are a few
things up including some updates to the pci services 
changes previously posted to this list and various
source file to get linux up on our PowerPC platforms.
Give it a try at:

www.mcd.mot.com/linux

Second, I apologize for previously posting the diffs and
howto for the pci services to these lists. I, however, did
not have any other means until now.  Since Alan Cox and others
were complaining that Motorola had not posted these changes
I felt I had no other choice.

To those of you on slow connections I do realize what I did.
You will notice that I do not mail in html or anything else
that bloats mail box sizes.  Sorry for any inconvenience.

While it is nce to have motorola *effectively* supporting linux
may I make the follwoing comments :

    1) The form you need to fill to access patches is quite
    painfull and if the purpose is only to notify users of
    patch changes, then email would be sufficient...
    2) The patch for 2.2.10 is 1.5 MB. It could have been 
    compressed!!!

Agreed. I do not like at all being forced to supply such  information
if I want or not. Please remove this!

You may add a link where anybody who *wants* notifications of changed
*may* register, but please do not try to force us!

An additional disadvantage  of  the  current  interface  is  that  it
disallows for automatic downloads using wget or similar tools.

   (MPC8xx, MPX82xx) ?

4) Running a diff against the original 2.2.10 distribution results in
   *all* files  being  different;  why  were  all  the  $Id$  strings
   changed?

   For instance - I guess there were not  so  many  changes  for  the
   Alpha prom code:

I'm not speaking for Motorola Computer Group, but the idea is to support
all current systems under Linux.  For MPC8xx and  MPC82xx processors,
this means the MBX (8xx) and the announced MVME2100 (82xx).

Keep in mind that the various evaluation boards for 8xx and 82xx are
produced by Motorola Semiconductor Processor Sector and any support for
those products would have to come from them.  I can tell you I have zero
contact with them and don't even know if they can pronounce Linux. :)

The patch creator forgot the -kk option in cvs to ignore tag changes.  I
passed this on...

Nor do I speak for SPS, but I asked around and here was the answer
I got. This person asked to remain anonymous, so obviously he's not
speaking for SPS either, but this is the current party line:

Netcomm is the group that manufactures, markets, distributes, and
supports 8xx and 82xx embedded processors. Obviously, a lot of lobbying
needs to be done to help them "get it", but software in a semiconductor
manufacturer is like an ethics committee at a political convention, they
know they've got to have it, but don't understand what it's good for. :-)

Free software folks are used to 'stick it somewhere for ftp' being a
viable option. I guess in Motorola you have to do things the official way

Im sure your intentions were good and Im glad the code is out. I've been
looking through it a bit but wont start to hack on it hard till Im back
from .ca
