The X rpms in the updates directory at ftp.linuxppc.org were a bad move. I had
reported that the first a set of test rpms wouldnt work in 16bit on RageII
chips like in the beige G3 computers. The problem is worse in the set that was
put into the updates directory. Now 16 and 24 will not work and 256 causes
netscape to have the old 24bit bug where all the widgets lose their coloring.

I noticed in the debian mailing list that there were some patches being
floated around, maybe 3.3.5 needs to be recompiled with these?

Which begs the question, have you re-configured X for 3.3.5?

Well, we have all those and more, so no.

What version 3.3.5 is this specifically? XFree86 3.3.5-1.6.0c? The initial
updated XFree86 rpms were 3.3.5-1.6.0a, which have since been replaced.

Also, what "updates" directory are you referring to? There are no XFree RPMS
at ftp://ftp.linuxppc.org/linuxppc-1999/updates/

I also had problems upgrading to 3.3.5. I thought I would finally get
FBDev accelerated working on my Wallstreet, but till now, no go. So I
wanted to switch back to Xpmac, which is also broken in 3.3.5. Only the
unaccelerated version seems to work. If I do a startx -- -mach64 it
completely hangs the machine (I only get a flashing prompt) and I can
not even get back to a virtual console, the keyboard shortcut to kill X
also does not work there. So I ended up with a set of 3.3.5-stuff and
just downgraded Xpmac to 3.3.3 again, which seems to work at the moment.
(Ben claimed, atyfb should be fine now in the new 2.2.12 kernel, but I
still get a white screen if I give video=atyfb as an option, and this
already at the console level...)
