I'd like to announce some test RPMS for of XFree86-3.3.5 that will work
under LinuxPPC 1999, YDL CS 1.x, and MkLinux pre-R1. These RPMS include
the following:
Anything that's been fixed in 3.3.5 over previous versions
USB keymap problems (Backspace/delete)
USB mouse stuff cleanup (mouseconfig sets BusMouse or IMPS/2)
Cleaned up adb keymaps/keycodes/etc (Kostas Gewrgiou <gewrgiou@imbc.gr>)
Updated Xautoconfig to take advantage of said fixes
Updated Xconfigurator to take advantage of said fixes
JDK fixes for XF68_FBDev
Note, with the JDK fixes there is a 99% chance you will need to
reconfigure X (old "Depth 32" is now 24, 16 is now 15 or 16, depending on
weather it's really 15bit or 16bit.). If you have any problems with this
release, please make sure you reconfigured your /etc/X11/XF86Config file
with one of the provided tools. The old ones will not work properly.
It's all available from ftp://devel.linuxppc.org/users/trini/XFree86-3.3.5
For Xautoconfig, Xconfigurator and mouseconfig there are versions for
uusbd (2.2.6) and normal USB stacks (2.2.10 from Paul M's site, 2.3.x,
samba's kernel tree, etc).
This fixes a good number of little bugs with USB (backspace in NS), and
makes things a bit cleaner (you can configure USB for the new kernels),
unless you're happy with your current setup, updating is sugjested, as
there are many security fixes from 3.3.3.1 or 3.3.4 to 3.3.5.

Just to follow up myself, it's been tested and working on matroxfb, offb
and aty128fb. If you have problems/working configs, please let me know

I installed Xfree86-3.3.5, and the configuration tools, ran Xconfigurator,
and rebooted. After much messing with my rc.local script (my fault it turns
out)for a while I was able to get back to a command line, and test X. It
turns oput I can only startx in 8 bit color or I get either Failed with
signal 11 or no valid modes errors. I noticed In the announcment message that
the X server will no longer run in 32 bit, but I am trying 16 bit and 24 bit
as suggested, but with no success. Any suggestions would be greatly
apprecaited as 8 bit looks gross with WindowMaker.
Thanks all!

Hello again all.
I've uploaded XFree86-3.3.5-1.6.0b rpms to
ftp://devel.linuxppc.org/users/trini/XFree86-3.3.5
If you installed 3.3.5-1.6.0a, and use FBDev, you only need to update that
particular RPM. If you use Xpmac, nothing should have changed. This
should fix most of the invalid depth/etc problems when trying to do >16.
Compiling w/ egcs 1.1.2-12f did not fix at least the main accel bug
(crash), so this is built vs 2.95.x as well. More feedback/etc is
welcome.

Tom: I installed XFree86-FBDev-3.3.5-1.6.0b only as directed, ran
Xconfigurator, and configured 8 bit, 16 bit, and 24 bit. I checked XF86Config
and it was configured for 8 bit, 15 bit, and 24 bit depths. Testing worked
fine in 8 bit, starting X with startx -- -bpp 16 worked ( wasn't sure if I
should use 15 or 16), and startx -- -bpp 24 also worked, but was quite
distorted. Sort of like looking through a kaliedoscope with 4 quadrants -
kind of reminded me of the 70s ;-). Running Xconfigurator & stting up only a
16 bit mode, or only a 24 bit mode would cause X to fail with a default 8 bit
mode not configured (more or less) message. I've gone back to the first rpm
now, but Ill try anything else you can suggest.

It's not working on my Lombard in 24-bit mode. 15-bit mode works
fine. Specifically, the server says:
No valid modes found
at startup when 24bpp is specified. It doesn't say why it is not
valid, it just doesn't work. Since it works in 15bpp mode, that seems
rather odd.
Also, my font server stopped working. It would lock the machine up at
startup. Actually, the machine wasn't locked up, but it wouldn't
finish booting since xfs didn't "daemonize" properly, it seems. I had
to remove it from the rc directories.
Also, starting the screen saver causes the following:
Fatal server error:
fbdevUpdateColormap: FBIOPUTCMAP failed (Function not implemented)
That would be nice to have fixed. This did the same thing for 3.3.3.

You need to use a frame buffer device that's specific for your hardware, not
just offb.

I've been able to get IBM's java XML editor Xeena to work with the
jdk121_pre-v1 mentioned at www.linuxppc.org.
I don't know what I'm doing with it...so I can't comment on how good it is ; )
