Hi,

I have rsynced paul's stable kernel tree to 2.2.15 proper (no pre),
this kernel works quite well with a G3 via yaboot, but will not boot a
7200 (via quik). I have tried my own custom config as well as Paul's
config included in the rsync tree. quik loads the kernel successfully
and prints `Copying Device tree' just like it does for 2.2.14 but the
monitor just stays black and nothing else happens, it never boots any
further.

the quik used is the current debian quik sources, patched by Dan
Jacobowitz to support powermacs. (there is no macos on this machine so
bootx is not an option, nor testable)

has anyone else had problems with 2.2.15 on 7200s?

the system runs Debian potato, and runs paul's 2.2.14.

Ethan

I think it may actually be booting, if it is hooked up to a netwrok try
pinging it or sshing into it, I also had this problem with the 2.2.14
pre series from linuxcare on my 7200/200 with a normal atyfb, the
problem was the thing's video was blank after the bootx sequence
finished loding it and the kernal ran. 2.2.10 was fine so I wanted to
know what the problem with the graphics was/is, it seems some change in
2.2.* recently made it detect the graphics capabilities incorectly and
not use the right mode.

so the fix is to put something like video=atyfb:vmode:5 on the kernel
command line and it will boot with text displauyed, I still am somewhat
annmoyed as 2.2.10 the thing auto detected and displayed 100x40 or osme
similarly sized mode, and now it only does 80x50, which I find way too
large (even on the 14" monitor I have with this machine (heck I happily
run 160x60 console on 15" monitors on my x86 boxen)

Anyway try forcing a specific video mode ont he kernel command line and
you may get a display. I was able to work with the machine with no
display quite happily using only ssh and such and was thus able to try
different kernels.

	See You

both were tried, also it is set to dail ppp on boot, so it is quite
obvious when it sucessfully boots since the modem starts screeching ;-)

hmm, this could explain why the screen stays black, but it is
certainly panicing or otherwise dying since it never becomes pingable
or dials ppp...

under 2.2.14 dmesg shows this for the framebuffer:

Total VRAM = 1MB 0001
Monitor sense value = 0x62b, using video mode 6 and color mode 0.
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30
fb0: platinum frame buffer device

> so the fix is to put something like video=atyfb:vmode:5 on the kernel

is this correct for the above framebuffer?

well this machine runs headless anyway so it really does not matter if
it has a usable console much just so it boots. the console does work
fine without any kernel arguments for 2.2.14 (paul's tree)

exactly how the box is managed, it only gets a monitor attached to see
why the kernel is failling to boot, but unfortunatly that is not
happening :(

ill see about forcing the video mode to at least see if we can get
more info as to what is going wrong (kernel panic, freeze, etc)

any other ideas?

thanks

No problems here, 2.2.15 and pre16-3 vanilla, with bootx(1.2b1). I don't
boot from MESH, I use my adaptec 2940UW. The same with dev kernels...
make pmac_config
make menuconfig (enable some eth dev's, disable parport and dos fs)
make vmlinux
make modules
make modules_install
put it to MacOS, reboot with 2.2.15, it still runs....

I know, not very helpful.

Hey,

That sounds like it's not recognizing your onboard video...

Be sure you have CONFIG_FB, CONFIG_FB_OF, and CONFIG_FB_PLATINUM set to
yes in your kernel config...

Otherwise, do you have a strange CPU upgrade? Did earlier versions of
Paul's kernel work on your machine?

would that cause the kernel to fail to boot entirely? the machine
never becomes pingable, sshable, nor does it dial ppp at boot like it
usually does.

yup, my .config is available on request, i did not want to spam the
list with such a large file. besides i tried using paul's config
included in his rsync tree as well, it failed too, the exact same way...

no and yes, the machine is perfectly stock except for having more
ram. and paul's 2.2.14 works on it (that is what it is running now)
