Hi All,

  Here is the boot log of an RS/6000 Model 170 which for the first time booted
Linux this past Friday.

  If I recall correctly it's a 375 Mhz Power 3 box. It's kinda weird as you'll
notice below the OpenPIC line indicates there are 8 processors here... well
there isn't, it's just a single processor box. Patches to be posted shortly.

It doesn't mean that the box has 8 CPUs, but that the OpenPIC can handle 8
CPUs. So the weird thing is that the OpenPIC can handle only one interrupt
source. Would you really want to build an OpenPIC for only one interrupt
source?

FYI, on my LongTrail it says `2 CPUs and 20 IRQ sources', which is correct for
the OpenPIC in the Apple Hydra.

I'm curious about a few things...

The Power 3 in the 170 is running in 32 bit mode I assume?

Also with reference to the PPC linux system running on the Beta Power 4
is this also in 32 bit mode?

The Power 3,  RS6000-III and Power 4 are all 64 bit chips from what I
understand and IBM's literature makes me think that AIX is indeed running
in 64 bit mode with the ability to run 32 bit apps.

Linux running on the Alpha also 32 bit? I would assume Tru64 Unix is
running in 64 bit mode on the Alpha....

	The AIX 4.3 kernel is running in 32-bit mode on 64-bit processors

Linux runs in 64 bit mode on the Alpha and the SPARC64 (UltraSPARC).
Linux runs in 32 bit or 64 bit mode on the MIPS64.

Hi Bob,

That's correct. The 64 bit PowerPC Kernel is a work in progress at the moment.

Actually the AIX kernel runs in 32 bit mode, however it has the ability to run
64 bit apps.

Alpha Linux is 64 bit.

All of the PowerPC chips from the G4 back to the 601 are 32 bit.

The new Power3-II and RS64-II (only found in IBM machines) are 64 bit but
have the ability to run 32 bit programs including the OS.

Someone else answered the question concerning alphas and sparcs. In the
intel world, everything from a 386 to the newest pentium 3/xeon/etc are
32 bit. The yet-to-be-released merced is 64 bit.

the PowerPC references around the web (including IBM and Motorola) for

32 bit. Call me the day an affordable 64 bit machine is available (I mean
for home user/hobbyist). No Apple machine has ever had a 64 bit processor
to start with.

Note that actually running the kernel in 32 bit mode makes sense
on 64 bit processors since the code is smaller (building addresses is much
easier and does not require a TOC) and there are fairly simple and cheap
MMU tricks to access all memory if needed (playing with segments but this
can be kept local to a given CPU, so no locking is necessary).
