Can anyone suggest an 8260 development board that is supported by the
Linux/PPC kernels.
Does the 2.2.X series support 8260 or would I have to go to the 2.3.X or
2.4 series ?

Thanks,
Brendan Simon.

EST SBC8260

You need to run the 2.4.x kernel to get the latest support. I have
2.4.0-test7 runing on the SBC8260, but 2.4.0-test8-pre1 panics during
startup. I have been getting my kernels from the Linux/PPC BitKeeper
Repository at FSMLabs (http://www.fsmlabs.com/linuxppcbk.html).

For a nice packaged solution, I would go to MontaVista
(http://www.mvista.com/) and get the Linux Support Package from the
CDK version 1.2 (http://www.mvista.com/cdk1.2/) for the SBC8260.

Look for *sbc8260*

Monta Vista has the 2.4.0 kernel running on EST's SBC8260 board.

Monta Vista's documentation says that you need their ROM monitor (I think
it's called RMON) programmed into the board's flash memory in order to boot
Linux, but we were able to get it running under EST's monitor (visionWare)
with the help of about 20 lines of assembly code.

No. The documentation describes the use of the software when _using_
that rom monitor. We had to choose something and it is impossible
to properly document an arbitrary set of tools for a board that arrives
without any useful software installed. There seems to be as many
different methods as people using these boards.

If you purchase the software subscription, MontaVista will also
program your SIMM so you are ready to go (no need to purchase the
expensive JTAG tools). Of course, the monitor is also available for
you to use as you wish.
