We had to choose something and it is impossible to properly document an arbitrary set of tools for a board that arrives without any useful software installed. There seems to be as many different methods as people using these boards. If you purchase the software subscription, MontaVista will also program your SIMM so you are ready to go (no need to purchase the expensive JTAG tools).
