Hi everyone -

I'm having some trouble getting my root filesystem mounted via nfs on an
sbc8260.  I'm using Linux-2.4.15 and PPCBoot-1.1.2.  I have both
configured to use fcc2 for the ethernet but it looks like Linux can't
use the ether net or something. In my server's log I see linux being
downloaded but there isn't even a request to mount the root file
system. I've used this nfs server before with the same root filesystem
(the difference was that I was using a Mach kernel) so I am 99.44% sure
that the server is not the problem.

Any insight that people could give would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Andy

It's either the FCC or the server. Since you have the FCC working in PPCBoot
and I've used FCC2 on other boards, I may assume the driver is working.

Since you have DHCP/BOOTP configured in the kernel, do you have a dhcp server
and can you simply try 'root=/dev/nfs rw ip=any' and see if you can talk to
dhcp? You could also use your favorite network sniffer to see what traffic,
if any, went along the network.

Thanks.

Here is something very strange. In PPCBoot I set the ethernet address
to 00:a0:1e:90:15:55.

=> printenv
<snip>
ethaddr=00:a0:1e:90:15:55
<snip>

And PPCBoot uses bootp to get lots of good information about who the
board is.

Now, as I watch Linux try to come up I see the following:

eth0: FCC ENET Version 0.2, 00:a0:1e:d0:15:55
fec: Phy @ 0x1, type 0x000fd04b

Notice that the ethernet address has changed. Very odd. I assume that
this info should be passed from PPCBoot to Linux via the board info data
structure bd_t.

Has anyone else seen this before?

Thanks,
Andy

In the ethernet driver for the FCC, it changes the MAC address based on
the FCC number.h

In a standard 2.4.4 kernel, arch/ppc/8260_io/fcc_enet.c is the
following code (around line 1315):
       /* Set Ethernet station address.
         *
         * This is supplied in the board information structure, so we
         * copy that into the controller.
         * So, far we have only been given one Ethernet address. We make
         * it unique by setting a few bits in the upper byte of the
         * non-static part of the address.
         */
        eap = (unsigned char *)&(ep->fen_paddrh);
        for (i=5; i>=0; i--) {
                if (i == 3) {
                        dev->dev_addr[i] = bd->bi_enetaddr[i];
                        dev->dev_addr[i] |= (1 << (7 - fip->fc_fccnum));
                        *eap++ = dev->dev_addr[i];
                }
                else {
                        *eap++ = dev->dev_addr[i] = bd->bi_enetaddr[i];
                }
        }

You can here see that the ethernet port's MAC address is dependent on
the fcc number.
