Hi,

I was wondering how well the mpc85xx of motorola (PowerPC e500 core) is
currently supported in the linux/u-boot combination.
Can anyone give some pointers about this matter ?

Kind regards,
Gerrit Van de Velde

Hi Gerrit,

I am planning to release an updated version of the mpc85xx support
for U-Boot in just a few days. It will be updated to Rev 1.1 and
has major improvements to the TSEC driver. An updated Linux release
is close as well, but I'll let my partner in crime speak there. :-)

Are there specific features you are concerned about?

Major improvements? I recently posted a patch for the RPC/STx 8560
board that included some TSEC updates, I don't know if they have made
it into the CVS. If not, please snag that from the mailing list so
they are not lost.

Those of us working on 85xx support have our own local versions of
Linux 2.4. Due to the amount of change and the desire to keep 2.4
stable, we are negotiating some clever ways to get this checked into
the public trees. I have the U-boot and kernel available for the
RPC/STx GP3 boards on my server, if that is useful to get you started.

Thanks.

Hi,

I also use U-Boot and Linux 2.4 on 8560 quite successfully.
Has anyone tried to use SPE unit of e500?

I would also be interested in dev versions of 85xx kernels? Is it possible
to get access to the cvs?

thanks,
  Matevz

Yesterday and today I have sync'ed up our internal tree to include
the delta up to the U-Boot 1.1.0 release. Relative to what we had
in our tree before that (circa 2004_01_26), the only changes to the
TSEC code were a bunch of volatile declaration changes. Those mods
are effectively captured in our update. If there was more than that,
since the 1.1.0 release, I'll go searching...

We have been keeping the linuxppc-2.4 bitkeeper in sync with our work
for 85xx. See http://penguinppc.org/dev/kernel.shtml on how to get
access.

From the kernel point of view, SPE applications should be enabled
(context switching and debug support).

Sorry, they didn't make it into the CVS yet. They are definitely not
lost but sitting in my input queue.

I know you wouldn't lose them, I just wanted Jon to know there was
a pending update from me and to not lose track of that. :-)

Thanks.

I have a raft of MPC85xx (specifically, MPC8560ADS support) for 2.6.4
if anyone wants them.

While my interest is mostly academic for now,
I would be happy to take a look.

How are chances this becomes the mainstream port?
Isn't Motorola/Metroworks working on this also?
