is the vanilla kernel 2.4.27 from kernel.org considered stable for MPC8xx systems?
Or do I still have to go for the trees on ppc.bkbits.net ?

I once used it for try but came up some making errors.

You'd better to if u wanna to see the succeed earlier
or switch to DENX linuxppc_2_4_devel cvs repository.
