No, that's not an invitation to start a flame war. :)
I'm wondering if anyone has continued to develop the quik bootloader
for pmac. I really enjoy not having to have macos boot before getting
to linux, and it fixes a few minor serial port problems as well.
However, it seems to still have some annoying limitations like
loadable kernel size and no support for gzipped kernels. Occasionally,
it fails to boot linux on my G3/266 (bought in march of 98, so I didn't
get the spiffy see-thru case).
I would offer to help fix some of these bugs, but information
is lacking and I don't want to duplicate someone elses effort.
So if anyone was thinking "We should just ditch Quik, cause nobody
uses it", this was for them. :)

I'm happy to heard that. Reading www.linuxppc.{org,com}, it seems that
everybody is happy with bootX and that developpment of quik has been stopped.
I was wondering if you all still have MacOs. I'm willing of getting rid of
MacOs (not that it's bad, but I don't use it anymore, now), but I'm afraid if
it was safe, seeing linuxppc site.

None of my systems have MacOS on them...I'm using quik. I have no desire
to reinstall MacOS just so I can boot linux. Will quik work with the 2.2
kernel, or will I be screwed here? I'm currently using 2.1.24 on all my
systems.

This should be added to the FAQ...
BootX is not meant to _replace_ quik. Since OF is not working well enough
on a lot of Macs, BootX may be your only choice, but if quik works for
you and you like it, then use it, it's hopefully still working. OF
booting is better from a "theorical" point of view ;-)

Of course all newish (not the earliest ones though, at least the current
quik) Monolithic PowerPC Kernels support Quik. Quik will continue to be a
important option in both LinuxPPC, and will continued to be compatible with
all kernels in the future. (How else do you boot a non-macintosh PowerPC
system into Linux?)
Quik is here to stay, you can rest assured. Many people still use it often,
especially in the case of LinuxPPC-only boxes or machines without MacOS.
This has been discussed before, and just in case your wondering, both
LinuxPPC R5 and the next version of Yellowed Dog Linux will support it,
according to Haaz of LinuxPPC, Inc and the future support of Yellow Dog
according to that webpage. Yellow Dog Linux Server version 2.0 plans to
offer a enhanced setup wizard of open firmware, so as you can see quik is
here to stay.
Thanks,

I installed the most current version of linuxppc a few weeks ago on a
7300/200. BootX 1.0b6 would just freeze with macos on the screen when I
would try to boot from a scsi device. I did install quik during the
install. it does work if i have the floppy in and pass root= and noinitrd.

Quik works fine w/ 2.2.x and 2.1.xxx. Tho when you install R5 you might
have a bit of trouble. (BootX only install ATM, but putting the ramdisk
and a vmlinux into a .coff ala R4 is doable of course. And if anyone
wishes to make the installer do the Quik things needed, patches are
welcome.)

1.0b6 ? That's rather old... You would probably have more luck with a
more recent version.

You are correct! Grabbel 1.0.2 and a 2.2.1 kernel and it booted fine
(except that I forgot to turn on the drive with my root filesystem).
Thanks
