Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a real-time embedded linux version for the MBX860
board?

I am evaluating alternatives, but the only option I have so far found is
the MontaVista Hard Hat linux
with their Real-Time Scheduler. Are there any others available, which
has been proven to work and be stable on the
MBX860 or FADS860T (I know the FADS card is not a good choice, but we
have one already..)

Many thanks for your help...

Dan Furse

Is there a problem with this one? Hard Hat worked great for me on an
MBX821.

I used CDK 1.0 which includes hhl-ppc_8xx-kernel-2.2.13-3.noarch.rpm.
I didn't have any hard realtime requirements, so I didn't bother to
look at the realtime stuff (I believe that's in a separate patch anyway).

The newer CDK 1.2 even comes with vi and other goodies - I can't
see any reason not to use Hard Hat.

The only problem I had with the MBX was the lack of schematics (maybe
someone at Motorola actually has them, but I was not able to locate
that person). If you're considering buying new boards, you might look
at the Embedded Planet boards.

Keep in mind that both of these boards, the MBX and Embedded Planet,
are production-ready boards, not evaluation cards. Production ready
boards are always highest quality, have boot roms and easy to use tools,
and seldom have engineering information available. Most companies will
work with you to meet your own production costs when the volumes are
high, including providing the engineering information to build your
own. They are not interested in selling one for you to copy :-).

True, I guess I'm spoiled working around all this open source stuff. :)

Hey, sorry if its o.t. for the list, but I noticed Dan's doing a
conference session at the Embedded Linux Conference in Framingham
MA on the 27th. Just thought I'd mention it here if anyone on the
list was thinking about attending.

*Host* Now that must be why the MBX860 fails every single
environmental and EMC test we throw at it...

Don't get me wrong. You are absolutely right that the MBX860
_should_ be production quality. It just ain't so. And yes, we do
have the schematics for the MBX860 under a NDA. This schematics
does explain a lot of the troubles... I am not impressed by any
standard. We have designed a inhouse replacement, but have yet
to prototype and debug it. To busy. But no, it is not a direct
replacement. I refuse to make the same mistakes all over again.
We hook up alot of external logic that we need to just work.

We have the schematics, I do not copy...
