Well, the efika is a CHRP board, and thus more akin to the pegasos or IBM
boxes than the embedded 52xx boards with regard to the device trees. Nico will
provide you an lsprop output.

Notice that the efika does not have the interrupt tree bindings in the
firmware. I implemented those on pegasos last month, but linux refused to
boot, and i am currently waiting for comments from benh on the lsprop output.

They should use either the /soc bus or the of_platform stuff (I'm coming
up with some reworked of_platform that can be useful to them).

Ben, would it make sense to add two informations to /proc/cpuinfo ?
It would be great to have a field there which will allow to check for the
kernel flavour to run, namely if the kernel/processor/whatever is running in
32bit or 64bit mode. The second field would be a generalized machine field,
or plateform or whatever, which would easily allow to differentiate between an
apple machine, a ibm chrp, a pegasos or other genesi product, etc. Without
necessarily having to maintain a huge amount of userlanf mappings from all
those different machine: fields, which all have CHRP, true, but no finer
grained informations, while we do have it in the kernel.

there is more than one implimentation of the ll_temac
as well as m ore than one of the plb_temac.
I have a combined 2.6 driver that I am working on.
It works (or it did last time I tried it) for the ll_temac
without the DMA engine.
no interrupts, slow with a fairly high rate of dropped packets.
The plb_temac portion is only for Fifo based plb_temacs, and is
close but not quite working yet.
It supports MII and autonegotiation (the last incarnation of the
Xilinx MV driver I save posted did not.)
I have used the Xilinx MV 2.6 driver - you can find links to it in
the ML archives, seems to work well enough
but is one speed - I forget which one. It is fairly simple to change
the code to a different speed, but it does not support autonegotiation
or MII.

There is a monsterous patch to the linux-2.6 git tree at
http://web.dlasys.net:8888/clients/pico/pico.patch that is for the Pico
E12/E14 boards.
Aside from the board support it includes My temac driver, The Xilinx
MV edk driver, my Uartlite driver, Peter Korsgaard's Uartlite driver
as well as in progress support for assorted other facets of the Pico
E12/E14.

You should be able to apply it to a 2.6.18 source tree, and have
support for some additional Xilinx hardware for your board - BUT, most
of the drivers
require additional data in you board support code.

I think it would be extremely useful to get a dump of what the device-
tree looks like. We have to be very careful to device nodes for 52xx
components are competed consistent between this 'CHRP' style and a
more embedded 52xx boards.

Some high level comments:
1. lets stick with the 52xx naming, instead of 5k2
2. PIC code needs to be updated for new interrupt model (as well as
remove of pt_regs)
3. use standard kernel debug macros
4. look at replacing sram_allocator w/rheap

if you repost the patch broken up into driver and platform bits it
will be easier to provide more detailed comments.

Hack or ack? :-)

The module one isn't that hairy, I just didn't look at it during
previous submission so I took it last.

I don't know the VDSO and side effects well enough to review that
patch, so you're on your own there.

It would be nice if this could be put in some common location instead
of duplicated between the two files. It builds differently on 32 and 64
bits due to the type defines, but both will never be used in the same
kernel.

grep POWER won't do good on 970 among others.

uname can be faked but why do you care ?

In fact, is somebody is faking it, maybe it's because they -want- your
scripts to think they are running on a 32 bits box....

I still think uname is the way to go.

Split this patch in two. One for the mapping cleanup and one for the
PHY changes.

This seems like a confusing way to indicate lack of interrupt. Can't

uname can be faked with powerpc32 or setarch. grep POWER /proc/cpuinfo

Hello Rahul,

First of all please don't do top-posting rather do bottom-posting. For

First in kernel-2.6.x its better to use kthread_*() rather than
kernel_thread if threading is needed.

Threading isn't necessary in any device until unless you need it. For
example if your driver is emulating a device or performing IO directly
then you don't need it, but if your driver is sending request to a
device which generates interrupts after completing IO and you want to
do some extra work after getting IO completion interrupt then you must
use thread. As threads work in process-context, hence can do sleep and
lengthy processing but interrupt-context shouldn't sleep or nor do
long processing.

For getting more understanding about different contexts like process,
interrupt, softirqs contexts do search google.

* [PATCH 5/5] powerpc: Cell timebase bug workaround #3
From: Benjamin Herrenschmidt @ 2006-10-20 4:37 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Paul Mackerras; +Cc: linuxppc-dev list
In-Reply-To: <1161308840.10524.112.camel@localhost.localdomain>

The Cell CPU timebase has an errata. When reading the entire 64 bits of
the timebase with one mftb instruction, there is a handful of cycles
window during which one might read a value with the low order 32 bits
already reset to 0x00000000 but the high order bits not yet incremeted
by one. This fixes it by reading the timebase again until the low order
32 bits is no longer 0. That might introduce occasional latencies if
hitting mftb just at the wrong time, but no more than 70ns on a cell
blade, and that was considered acceptable.

Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>

And finally the proper version, sorry for the mishaps, previous one has
a typo (harmless, but still....)

* u-boot question
From: Lei Sun @ 2006-10-20 3:58 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linuxppc-embedded

Hi all:
Is this the right list to ask for U-BOOT related question? If it's
not, please igore it and direct me to the right list.
I am trying to bring up a custom designed board based on MPC8270,
after spent 3 weeks on fixing hardware issues (extreme surgery !) , I
finally be able to read something out of the flash and verified SDRAM
is working as well. Up to this point our JTAG debugger is dead! I
burned u-boot Image using a programmer and put it in. after power up
and did a PORESET, I found out that every 20 seconds or so , system
generated HRESET,( by measuring the HRESET pin of the JTAG port). It
does read Hardware Reset Config Word when reset happens (I saw pulse
on the CS0 pin). Before the JTAG die, i was able to issue "reset"
command through it and found out the PC stays at 0x100, but issue
"go" command , the PC became 0x000000fc and hangs.
  My questions are :
1. What's the best way to verify that CPU read correct HRCW ?
2. Any good JTAG debugger for this family of CPU you can recommend ?
We bought Gaurdian-SE from etoolsmith (the company no longer exsit!)
which really sucks!

Thanks!

Today... I can see reasons why platform drivers might want to get at
it, but I can remove the export for now.

That's strange. No matter how I test the driver it now works
perfectly for me with my patches. Did you apply them both? However, I
cannot see why the length of the transmission would cause any
difference.

What is you baud rate on SMC2? How about the TX buffer count and TX
FIFO size - have you changed them? I suspect that cpm_uart_tx_pump()
could disable your TX interrupt when you have all characters queued in
separate TX buffers. I'll test this theory tomorrow.

You might want to strace your program and post the results here. Also put

  #define DEBUG

in front of cpm_uart_core.c and cpm_uart_cpm2.c and recompile. You'll
get a lot of debugging messages after

  echo 8 > /proc/sys/kernel/printk

That should give us clues what goes wrong. The output of

  stty -F /dev/ttyCPM1 -a

would also help.

* [RESEND][PATCH] ucc_geth: changes to ucc_geth driver as a result of qe_lib changes and bugfixes
From: Kim Phillips @ 2006-10-20 2:07 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: jgarzik; +Cc: linuxppc-dev, netdev

From: Li Yang <leoli@freescale.com>

changes due to qe_lib changes include:

o removed inclusion of platform header file
o removed platform_device code, replaced with of_device
o removed typedefs
o uint -> u32 conversions
o removed following defines:
  QE_SIZEOF_BD, BD_BUFFER_ARG, BD_BUFFER_CLEAR, BD_BUFFER,
  BD_STATUS_AND_LENGTH_SET, BD_STATUS_AND_LENGTH, and BD_BUFFER_SET
because they hid sizeof/in_be32/out_be32 operations from the reader.
o removed irrelevant comments, added others to resemble removed BD_ defines
o const'd and uncasted all get_property() assignments

bugfixes, courtesy of Scott Wood, include:

- Read phy_address as a u32, not u8.
- Match on type == "network" as well as compatible == "ucc_geth", as
device_is_compatible() will only compare up to the length of the
test string, allowing "ucc_geth_phy" to match as well.
- fixes the MAC setting code in ucc_geth.c. The old code was overwriting and dereferencing random stack contents.

Jeff, this is a bugfix. ucc_geth does not currently build, let alone run. It's a re-send of this:

http://ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc-dev/2006-October/026690.html

but with the removal of the inclusion of a platform header file. So, this patch fixes all buildtime and runtime errors; please apply.
