* [PATCH 12/13] powerpc: Add bootwrapper support for Motorola PrPMC2800 platform

The Motorola PrPMC280 and PrPMC2800 processor modules sit on an F101 or
PrPMC2800 baseboard, respectively.  There are several variants of each
type of processor module which can have different amounts of memory,
amounts of FLASH, cpu frequencies, and an mv64360 or an mv64362.

The bootwrapper code for that platform reads VPD from an I2C EEPROM
to determine the processor module variant.  From the variant, the
amount of memory, etc. is determined and the device tree is updated
accordingly.  If the variant cannot be determined (e.g., corrupted
VPD or a previously unknown variant), the property values already
in the device tree are used.

Also, the firmware for those platforms does not completely configure
the mv64x60 host bridge so that configuration is done here.

for clarification/list archiving of the answers:


This adds yet another set of chipset drivers under sysdev, that are
only used by one platform (several board ports under that platform,
but only one platforms/* directory).

In my opinion, they really should go under the platform directory instead,
and not clutter the shared directory.

Same with tsi*, it should probably be moved, as well as the 8xx*
drivers. fsl_* seems to be shared, so does cpm2*.

embedded6xx has a handful of different chipsets, so it could make sense
to create a subdir under platforms/embedded6xx for chipset support,
but there's no need to keep them in sysdev.


Or is sysdev really supposed to be a dumping ground for all chipset
drivers, even those who are not shared between platforms?

If not, I'll be happy to bake up a patch that moves things out (unless
the platform maintainers want to do it themselves) for 2.6.23.

QEMU really really wants a PREP kernel, and that stuff's just not in the new
arch/powerpc tree anymore is it?

I'd love to see the device tree once QEMU's kernel has booted :D

I wonder.. would it be useful to have a qemu platform in arch/powerpc and
for someone to start hacking in devices from a non-emulated point of view?
It seems a bit of a waste in my mind to emulate a network card, serial port
IDE interface, ADB (yick!) and a VESA graphics adapter in such 'detail' when
it can be passed back to the emulation somehow through some kind of clever
call interface (maybe just have the zero page of the emulation contain a
bunch of 'ports' which are really function calls pointers..?)

I don't think there a lot of point to this part of the patch.  Just
have image-y directly specify the appropriate zImage.dts.% form (or

dtc now supports the syntax:
	partition-names = "FW Image A", "FW Config Data", ...
for multi-string properties to make this sort of thing less ugly.

Linus' tree.  It was fixed by commit
823bccfc4002296ba88c3ad0f049e1abd8108d30 ('remove "struct subsystem" as
it is no longer needed') from Greg Kroah-Hartman dated 2007-04-14 which
was applied before v2.6.21-mm2 (according to gitk).

Well.. sort of.  The first cut at the idea is that ? would be
equivalent to zeroes in terms of dtc output, but would act as internal
documentation that that property is supposed to be filled in by the
bootloader.

Refinements to try to enforce that would be nice: easiest is to
replace it with a configurable poison value.  When using asm output,
or with a map file, it might be possible to generate out-of-band
information which we can use to check that the right things are filled
in.

It's not a simply a matter of making the kernel parser recognize the
uninitialized info, because there's no way to encode that in the dtb
itself.

I disagree, actually.  Having these things in a shared directory makes
it more likely that people will look at the code.  That means that
it's more likely that bugs will be found, and more likely that parts
of the code can get reused when people are doing the port to a new
chip or board.

If there were hundreds of files in arch/powerpc/sysdev then I would be
more likely to agree with you, but there aren't.

qemu is PReP, eh?  Well that would explain the not working: PReP
hasn't been ported to arch/powerpc yet.  The fact that qemu acts like
a PReP might make doing so rather easier.

The core of the USB block is the same, but it can be changed or enhanced
when integrated into different chips.  As for 831x vs 834x, 831x has
only DR module and supports on-chip PHY.

Fix Kconfig undefined symbol 'IBM_NEW_EMAC_ZMII'

An allmodconfig on the current powerpc tree yields:
arch/powerpc/platforms/44x/Kconfig:41:warning: 'select' used by config symbol '440GP' refers to undefined symbol 'IBM_NEW_EMAC_ZMII'

Remove the select until the driver exists.

Oops.  Forgot to fix up the iSeries code for this change, breaking
compile.  Revised patch below.

Kill typedef-ed structs for hash PTEs and BATs

Using typedefs to rename structure types if frowned on by CodingStyle.
However, we do so for the hash PTE structure on both ppc32 (where it's
called "PTE") and ppc64 (where it's called "hpte_t").  On ppc32 we
also have such a typedef for the BATs ("BAT").

This patch removes this unhelpful use of typedefs, in the process
bringing ppc32 and ppc64 closer together, by using the name "struct
hash_pte" in both cases.

They have the same patch that you made (I made it), yet they reported
that it didn't work properly for them.

Can you test your patch out on "real" hardware?
