mdio-device does the trick. This feature wasn't used by any other board in the
kernel yet.
I made another error. I did mix up the order of the MAL irqs, so the irq
handlers went mad. This was detected as a soft lock-up.
After correcting that both emacs are working on ppc405EP :).

* RFC: adding post build comments to kernels
From: Leisner, Martin @ 2008-04-15 21:47 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev
I'm a big proponent of marking kernels with their characteristics during
development -- instead of trying to coordinate multiple pieces of
information and hope you get it right (I don't like to try)
I've been lobbying for /proc/config for a decade (that's one of the
first
things I enable when I'm doing kernel hacking).
I have a strategy to put "patch comments" into a kernel which you can
easily=20
extract at runtime (I use a separate elf section for now, is there a
subsystem which already had the capability -- I have a macro
PATCH_ENTRY(string)
which puts this string wherever you want in the source(marging it with
the file/line,date). =20
What I wanted is something so I can "add text" to a kernel (i.e. the
results of my patches). It would be nice to extract at runtime, but not
necessary.
What I did was just:
cat >>uImage
some comments
<control-D>
and I can easily extract it with this script:
#! /bin/bash
image=3D$1
args=3D$(mkimage -l $1 2>/dev/null | grep 'Data Size')
set - $args
size=3D$3
size=3D$((size + 64))
dd if=3D$image skip=3D$size bs=3D1 2>/dev/null
This works fine:
%uboot-comments ./uImage 2.6.22.19-vanilla
this is a test
lovely kernel
but mkimage -l complains a little:
%mkimage -l uImage-2.6.22.19-vanilla
*** Warning: "uImage-2.6.22.19-vanilla" has corrupted data!
Image Name: Linux-2.6.22.19
Created: Mon Apr 14 13:04:02 2008
Image Type: PowerPC Linux Kernel Image (gzip compressed)
Data Size: 1578239 Bytes =3D 1541.25 kB =3D 1.51 MB
Load Address: 0x00000000
Entry Point: 0x00000000
I suppose a tool could be build with compresses the kernel, puts in a
special elf section with a comment, recompresses the kernel, and builds
a new image -- but this is pretty easy...
This seems to boot with no problems...

* [PATCH 0/3] Support for Wind River SBC8641D board
From: Paul Gortmaker @ 2008-04-15 22:41 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev
All the updates based on the feedback from folks (thanks!) are integrated
into this resend. This should be good to go for powerpc-next/2.6.26.
The following patches add support for the Wind River SBC8641D board.
I've done it by starting with the current mpc8641_hpcn support and
then making the changes from there, so it should be 1:1 comparable
with the HPCN platform, which aids in tracking/applying future changes.
The SBC8641D support essentially boils down to trimming back stuff
from the HPCN platform, as this board doesn't have the Uli and all
the devices/busses etc. that the HPCN cascades from that. Plus of
course, the dts changes for the localbus specifics.
Patches that aren't included here, but submitted separately are the
support for the Broadcom 5464 quad PHY and the ability to have the
Gianfar TBIPA be auto assigned (since this board puts a PHY at 0x1f).
Both of these are on track for being part of 2.6.26 already.
Thanks,
Paul.

* [PATCH 1/3] powerpc: Add support for Wind River SBC8641D board
From: Paul Gortmaker @ 2008-04-15 22:41 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev; +Cc: Paul Gortmaker
In-Reply-To: <1208299292-21937-1-git-send-email-paul.gortmaker@windriver.com>
This adds support for the Wind River SBC8641D board, based
largely on the mpc86xx_hpcn support. The biggest difference is
the lack of the Uli and the i8259 cascade, which simplifies things.

* [PATCH 2/3] powerpc: Add device tree source for Wind River SBC8641D
From: Paul Gortmaker @ 2008-04-15 22:41 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev; +Cc: Paul Gortmaker
In-Reply-To: <96011ba20ab9319aa866c12e2ff91ad579d26aed.1208296521.git.paul.gortmaker@windriver.com>
This adds in the device tree source for the SBC8641D, based
largely on the mpc8641_hpcn.dts. The biggest differences are
the lack of a complex IRQ mapping (since no Uli/i8259 cascade)
and the different layout of devices on the localbus node.

Done.
I've also removed the sbc8641 content from this patch, and rolled it
into the resend of those board specific patches. This is now just for
incorporating that same feedback into existing boards.
Thanks,
Paul.

Subject: [PATCH] 86xx: mark functions static, other minor cleanups
Cleanups as suggested by Stephen Rothwell and Dale Farnsworth, which
incudes marking a bunch of functions static and add a vendor prefix to
the compat node check for uniqueness. We match on the old compat node
ID for one version and warn accordingly, so as to not plunge people
into silent boot death, as suggested by Timur Tabi.

Assuming its not a CONFIG_RELOCATABLE kernel than bad things. Is
there some concern you have here?

correct. ioremap uses map_page which isn't effected by ARCH_PFN_OFFSET
> What happens to /dev/mem when ARCH_PFN_OFFSET != 0?
it behaves the same. You provide a physical address and it provides
access to it. (so you could access memory you aren't suppose to)

Paul,
The aim is to have more flex space for the kernel on machines with more resources. Although the dump will be collected pretty fast and the memory released really early on allowing the machine to have the full memory available, this alleviates any issues that can be caused by having way too little memory on very very large systems during those few minutes.

can you add a commit about the change to the root compatible and its
