If extra stuff needs to be done, it shouldn't claim to be a simple-bus.

"fsl,mpc8272-usb", "fsl,cpm2-usb".

Where is fsl,qe_udc documented or used (other than in the BCSR setup)?
What does "udc" mean (the only reference to it in the 8272 manual is
under ATM)?

The difference between a phandle and an ihandle is similar to the
difference between (the inode of) an executable files on disk and (the
process id of) a running process. A phandle refers to the static
information that describes a device, while an ihandle refers to a
particular (out of potentially several) active instantiation of the OFW
driver for that devices. An "instance value" is a data item that can
have a different value for each of the running instances of a given
driver. In the analogy, an instance value is like a data segment variable.

Given an ihandle, you can get the corresponding phandle with
ihandle>phandle. You can't go from phandle to ihandle, because that
direction is one-to-many.

Why you you ever need more than one running instance of a given driver?
For leaf devices, it is pretty rare to have multiple instances.
Multiple instances are more often used for intermediate nodes. The same
intermediate node - for example a usb node - is often the parent of
several leaf nodes that are active simultaneously. When you open a
device, its device tree parents up to the root are implicitly opened.
Each such instance can hold dynamic state on behalf of its children.

You already marked it as "Obsolete" more than 2 years ago, and due the
kconfig dependencies most people anyway won't even see the option (since
they have HVC_ISERIES enabled).

IMHO a candidate for a straight removal?

* [PATCH] powerpc: add SSI-to-DMA properties to Freescale MPC8610 HPCD device tree
From: Timur Tabi @ 2008-08-06 16:48 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: galak, linuxppc-dev

Add the fsl,playback-dma and fsl,capture-dma properties to the Freescale
MPC8610 HPCD device tree. These properties connect the SSI nodes to the
DMA nodes for the DMA channels that the SSI should use. Also update the
ssi.txt documentation.

These properties will be needed when the ASoC V2 version of the Freescale
MPC8610 device drivers are merged into the mainline.

I thought linux,stdout-path is deprecated are we're supposed to be

ihandles and phandles are not the same thing in OF. Since in the
"flat world" we cannot have instances, we should use phandles instead
of ihandles for the things in /chosen. I thought we agreed on that

Delete all of these. Don't use these silly macros at all. Reference
the structure fields directly, and use the in_ and out_ functions
directly.

Using macros like these encourages unnecessary typecasts. "struct
qe_bd" has been defined, so you should use it.

Hi,

Few (mostly cosmetic) comments below. I didn't look into locking and
other stuff, just few general questions: did you try this driver
with CONFIG_SMP (even on UP machine), CONFIG_PREEMPT,
CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK and CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP?
These options will trigger most obvious bugs.

Also, I think sparse tool will be very unhappy about this driver,
there are lots of unnecessary and dubious casts...

Also surprisingly, checkpatch reports just few warnings though there
are a lot of cosmetic issues...

Nobody seem to use this.

Don't see any calls to sleep or delay.

Do you really need irq.h? This is somewhat internal header.

Seems spurious also.

Not sure about this one.

These are externed in the include/asm-powerpc/cpm.h.

> +#define qe_muram_alloc cpm_muram_alloc
> +#define qe_muram_free cpm_muram_free

qe_muarm_* calls are cpm_muram_* calls, see
include/asm-powerpc/qe.h in the recent kernels.
So, you can just switch to cpm_*.

This seem to fit into one line perfectly well.

The comments are broken this way all over the place.
Can we stick with

? This is orthodox style.

This *looks* like a cast. But actually it is "a & b". It took me
quite some time to parse this. Just remove parentheses to avoid
the confusion.

You don't need, neither check any return value for this function.
Return type of void will work here.

You don't need the cast here. But also it is good idea to change
return type of qe_udc_config() from void * to struct qe_udc *.

Can't fail?

In the recent kernels we have both cpm_muram_addr and cpm_muram_offset.
No need to duplicate them.

I'd turn this into static inlines. But since there are no casts,
this seems to be fine...

Please turn these macros into `static inline' functions. The benefit of
using functions is type checking.

Sorry, I forgot to reply to the list :( Kumar mentioned the "make
headers_install" and I got it working with our build system. So
everything is back on track.

The user space headers are provided by your distribution, not
by the kernel, so include/asm should be a directory, not a symlink.
If you are building your own distro, don't just copy the files
but rather use 'make headers_install' to get a sanitized version.

It's only valid for 1 <= n <= 31 though, so for input "range" 0 or 1.

If that's the whole range needed, much simpler code is possible...

(*) or 0xffffffff or 0xfffffffe, but somehow I doubt that was intended.

After checking our schematics with Tim Yamin, we found that our board
has not the DMA lines connected. It seems I have to wait some time
before I get an updated board and can test UDMA again ....

Sorry for the noise, although this was important for us to know.

Hurray! Looks good, just a few nits...

bl p_base instead?

Either the code or the comment is wrong -- the code says "skip
relocation
if we don't have either".

> +	cmpwi	r0,22 /* R_PPC_RELATIVE */

It would be nice if there was some way to complain (at build time?)
if there are unhandled relocations present. Prevents a lot of headaches
when things go wrong (and they will ;-) )

Fix these while you're at it? It's not r0, it's 0.

Do some of these sections need alignment?

I will take your word for it as I have no idea. This driver needs to be

Yes, they added code to check another property. If the reg-shift or
reg-offset properties were present, then it didn't try to use the port

"extra stuff".. not sure what you mean. I'm guessing you me other

The Xilinx folks hit something similar. ns16550 nodes get matched if
the parent claims simple-bus. If extra stuff needs to be done to use
that port, then bad things happen.

Probably not at this point in the lifecycle. We brought this up
before the merge window opened though, so I'm just wondering what the
general plan is. Seems lots of fixes and such are getting put out, but
not pulled into the kernel.

It's not what we do with flattened device trees blobs though. In the
flattened tree we're not using a /chosen/stdout property, just the
linux,stdout-path one.

The question that remains is; should there be? Should the dt blobs
use /chosen/stdout also? (I'm not familiar enough with real OF to
know the answer. I'm assuming that an instance value is not the same
as a phandle).
