So I will write .setup_arch of machine_call  structure.
When is ppc_md.setup_arch() called ?

Patches should be in -p1 format. Best use a tool like quilt, git or
mercurial to generate the patch instead of doing it by hand.

The "EARLY DEBUG" stuff is a pile of hacks to help with bringup,
it's definitely not a long term solution to your problems.

You may also want to look at Grant Likely's work on doing proper
early ioremap using BATs.

There's a lot more functions than locks ;-)

Anyway, this is only needed after system boot up. But then we do it ever 
time we start or stop tracing. I'll try it out and see if it is noticable.

Ouch, I just did. text_poke is quite heavy. It would be interesting to see 
that performed on 20,000 locations at one time. I could play with it, but 
I'm a bit nervous.

Is it 32 bit or 64?  I've tested the 64 bit quite a bit, but not so much 
the 32 (my powerbook is not usually that stable).

You might want to look at the entry.S mcount code too.

We map it writeable if FTRACE is enabled.

put (unless we have permissions wrong, and that would be a bug).

Well, it seems to still call things based on #ifdef CONFIG_* instead
of testing for whatever "errata" bit or flag you can initialize.

A proper approach is to have the OF probe code detect via some
device-tree compatible testing or such, that it's indeed hitting the
broken chip, use that to set a quirk in the controller, and then
have the core ehci-hub.c code do whatever it has to do based on
the presence of that quirk.

I've had similar crashes (with similar backtraces in the VFS) on
machines with no modules, netbooted zImages.
