Hello,
I am trying to setup a initrd on my board. I selected initrd support in the
2.6.26 kernel. But when my boad boots, it crashes affet MMU:exit.
What is the process in order to use a initrd ?
Thanks

u-boot doesn't contains any related code for this moment...
I think we need to add some code that adds "clock-frequency" property for the
"fsl,cpm-brg" compatible node to the u-boot as it expected in get_brgfreq.

Your diagnosis is correct! I changed the define from 8<<20 to 8<<21 and it now
boots. Previously the parameters were at 7ffe70, and this change moved them to
fffe70.
I would like to switch over to using a uImage rather than the cuboot.uImage.
But I have not figured out whether it is the U-boot build that converts the .dts
to a .dtb or if the kernel build should do that. Also, I have not figured out
whether the .dtb can remain part of the kernel image, as it is with the cuboot
kernel, or if the .dtb must be a separate image in a different part of the rom.
So basically, I understand the components, but I'm not yet sure how to glue it
all together.

yeah I thought of something like that too, because I expect the
difference to be very small.
Instead of a module I wanted to put this somewhere prior to the kernel
mounting root-fs to avoid interferences from whatever userspace is doing
(e.g. causing thousands of interrupts come back while the module
perform that test.).
Eventually we need a synthetic benchmark like that AND a check how it
affects a common system to be sure.

* [PATCH 0/2] powerpc: Board support for GE Fanuc SBC610
From: Martyn Welch @ 2008-08-21 13:41 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev; +Cc: paulus
The following series implements basic board support for GE Fanuc's SBC610, a
6U single board computer, based on Freescale's MPC8641D.
This series provides basic functionality:
- The board can boot with a serial console.
- Ethernet works, though the phys are polled.
- The PCI bus is scanned and sata functions.

Are you modifying the right file here? There is also

Yes, it was our intention to increase the default map to a higher value a few

I forgot to mention this is a precursor to moving arch/powerpc to
using the generic math-emu code in include/math-emu/
I don't see any reason to fixup the old code.

The dts is part of the kernel source, so its part of the kernel build
procedure. You can either do this by hand or use the "make kilauea.dtb"
target.

When you use uImage, then U-Boot needs the dtb additionally to the kernel
image. Those two images (and more) can be combined to a single image using
the new U-Boot image format FIT (Flattened Image Tree) though.

Can you actually boot a plain uImage from U-Boot?
I've just gave it a try. While arch/powerpc/boot/cuImage.sequoia boots fine,
after `make uImage', I get arch/powerpc/boot/uImage, but it doesn't boot:

Sure. We did this all the time in arch/ppc. Now in arch/powerpc all you need
is an device-tree enabled U-Boot version. This is standard for most targets
since a few months.

Try a higher load address for the kernel. 4MB is a good value.

Ups. This is most likely too old and can't boot arch/powerpc uImage files.

Stefan

* [PATCH 2/2] powerpc: Default configuration for GE Fanuc SBC610
From: Martyn Welch @ 2008-08-21 13:41 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev; +Cc: paulus
In-Reply-To: <20080821133852.17201.3862.stgit@welchma.Radstone.Local>
Support for the SBC610 VPX Single Board Computer from GE Fanuc (PowerPC
MPC8641D).
This is the default config file for GE Fanuc's SBC610, a 6U single board
computer, based on Freescale's MPC8641D.

You don't *have* to do this though. There is a target called
'cuImage.<myboard>' which will embed the device tree blob in the
kernel image and is backwards compatible with older u-boot versions.
See arch/powerpc/boot/Makefile and arch/powerpc/boot/wrapper to see
how this is generated.
There is a new document that might help in Documentation/powerpc/bootwrapper.txt

Not just broken; completely removed! :-)

The goal is *not* to break existing device trees because we do not
know what has been deployed already and it some cases it is not
feasible to update the device tree on a device. So, even though
conventions have been refined and changed, backwards compatibility
with older trees is supposed to be preserved.
3b. Once you've written your device tree, post it to the
devicetree-discuss@ozlabs.org mailing list and ask for review.

There is a makefile target now to help you with this and pass the
right options for reserving entries:
$ make myplatform.dtb
The dtb image will appear in arch/powerpc/boot

The bug came in the original OProfile SPU support that was put out about
2 years ago. The way the code was there was a window in which you may
get corruption. It was not until Jan 08 when we got the first report of
the bug from Michael and identified it. Since then there have been
three or four more people who have hit and reported the bug. I am
seeing the bug show up more frequently with the latest couple of weekly
SDK 3.1 kernels. It would seem that the kernel may have changed such
that the timing is more likely to hit the bug. For the Beta SDK 3.1
release the IVT team was not able to complete their OProfile testing due
to the bug.

* I2C probe not happening
From: Steven A. Falco @ 2008-08-21 16:03 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev
I'm using DENX-2.6.26, and I've enabled the I2C_IBM_IIC on a Sequoia board,
but I don't see any probes happening.
It looks like of_register_i2c_devices is never being called. According to
cscope, it would be called in i2c-ibm_of.c, but that file is not part of
the build.
i2c-ibm_of.c would be compiled if CONFIG_I2C_IBM_OF was selected, but there
is no place in the Kconfig files that I2C_IBM_OF is mentioned. So, I added
it like so:
diff --git a/drivers/i2c/busses/Kconfig b/drivers/i2c/busses/Kconfig

Say Y here if you want to use IIC peripheral found on
embedded IBM PPC 4xx based systems.
Also, I noticed that i2c-ibm_of.c doesn't have an entry for the 440EPx, so
I added one:

However, the file does not compile. I get:

So perhaps it should not be part of the build. But in that case, I see
no way for the probes to run.
I must be missing something - hints gratefully accepted.

arch/ppc had them all lumped under platforms/4xx, but this was split in
the original arch/powerpc port when arch/powerpc/platforms/44x was
created. That left arch/powerpc/platforms/4xx for 40x which didn't
really make sense, so it was renamed to 40x.
I can understand why, as they are really two different platforms. So
logically it makes sense to have them separate. I'm not overly
motivated to convert it back to the old way but I might be able to be
convinced.

Presumably, they want to be able to replace wrtee with a store to a
hypervisor/guest shared memory area, and there's no store-immediate
instruction.

* libfreevec benchmarks
From: Konstantinos Margaritis @ 2008-08-21 16:09 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev
Benh suggested that I made this more known, and in particular to this list, so
I send this mail in hope that some people might be interested. In particular,
I ran the following benchmarks against libfreevec/glibc:
http://www.freevec.org/content/libfreevec_104_benchmarks_updated
libfreevec has reached a very stable point, where me and a couple of others
(the OpenSuse PowerPC port developer being one) have been using it for weeks
(personally I've been using it for months), using the LD_PRELOAD mechanism (as
explained here:
http://www.freevec.org/content/howto_using_libfreevec_using_ld_preload).
The OpenSuse guys even consider using it by default on the ppc port even, but
that's not final of course.
glibc integration _might_ happen if glibc developers change their attitude (my
mails have been mostly ignored).
Last, I've also been working on a libm rewrite, though this will take some
time still. I've reimplemented most math functions at the algorithm level, eg.
so far, most functions achieve 50%-200% speed increase at full IEEE754
accuracy (mathematically proven, soon to be published online) without using
Altivec yet, just by choosing a different approximation method (Taylor
approximation is pretty dumb if you ask me anyway).
