[1.] Using Philips CDD3610 cd-writer crashes my system with every 2.4 kernel
[2.] When trying to write a cd with my cd-writer (ide), it tries to write for
an instant, then my system start getting real slow, and finally only my
hardware accelerated cursor responds. No problems at all with 2.2 kernels. No
error messages are in /var/log/messages.

Hi,
Basically I've encountered the same problem, but it went away after 2.4.6.
Machine: P II 300 Mhz, Adaptec 2940 SCSI adapter, 64 Mb memory, 1x Seagate
ST34520W, 1x Seagate ST34520LW, 1x Philips CDD 3610, Toshiba XM-6201TA
OS: Redhat 7.1 with latest patches (except kernel)
Division over the buses as shown by cdrecord -scanbus
Scsibus0
0.0.0 Seagate ST34520W
0.2.0 Seagate ST34520LW
0.5.0 Toshiba CD-ROM XM-6201TA
Scsibus1
1.0.0 Philips CDD-3610 CD R/RW
and as stated everything fine after 2.4.6 (however 2.4.3-5 showed the same
behaviour as your machine). The cd drive makes after 2.4.6 a strange churning
sound when initializing cdrecord however. The cd's that were burned however
were flawless (at least up to 2.4.9).
Further info: in the 2.4.3-2.4.5 kernels the devices which are above shown in
scsibus0 were shown in scsibus1 and vice versa...

Hi Marko,
I used to have this problem, but its simply solvable by upgrading the firmware from 3.01 to 3.09. For some unknown reason 3.01 stops working with 2.4. You also get 700mb CD support for free;-)

Hi all,
One and a half year ago I asked for help to get the Philips CDD3610 cd-writer
to work with 2.4 kernels. Peter Kourzanov from Philips contacted me a few
months after that to tell me how to fix it, and I have since then been
contacted by other people with the same problem. Apparently my mail is about
the only reference they can find, so I'll post the fix here to let you (and
google) know it is fixed.
1) Go to:
http://www.philips.com/pcstuff/
2) click on the green "download" button at the bottom of the site
3) type CDD3610 in the input box that appears, you don't need to select a
country, and then click search. You need the .exe file, so you need to boot
either windows or DOS to flash your writer. I think you have to use DOS, but
I can't remember how I did it.
According to the text file, for the CDD3610 version 3.09 of the firmware is
included, which is the same version as I used so it should fix the drive.
