[bug report] NFS and uninterruptable wait states

The other day I was trying to set up an NFS mount to my room mate's system, 
and ran into what I at least, call a bug.  When I tried to mount his NFS 
export, the mount command locked up, and would not die.  Not even a SIGKILL 
would do any good.  According to ps, the mount process was in the 'D' - 
uninterruptable wait state.  It also looked like the WCHAN was rpc_ 
something.  I think it was waiting for an rpc call to return in the D state, 
and it never did return.  The bug here is that it should NOT be waiting in 
the D state for something that could never happen.  For that matter, why 
should anything ever need to wait in an uninterruptable state?  Whenever you 
wait, you should expect the possibility of being interrupted, check for that 
when you wake up, and if you were, clean up and return so the signal can be 
processed.

Anyhow, about an hour later ( the mount process still stuck ) I figured out 
that the other machine was not running rpc.nfsd, though it was running 
rpc.mountd.  Once I started rpc.nfsd on the machine, the mount on my box 
finally returned ( and was terminated by the SIGKILL that I sent it an hour 
before ).

Could someone confirm that this is a bug, and explain why anything should 
ever need to wait in that state?

Well, if you use the option "soft",then your process is interruptible.

Where this gets really impractical: commands like df or du will
hang forever (if the other end is out of your control).

Err, "intr" will give you interruptible state. "hard" will retry forever,
"soft" will timeout and give up .

NFS does this (wait in D state) by default in order to prevent naive
applications from getting timeout errors that they're not equipped to
handle--the idea being that, if an NFS server goes down, programs
using it will simply freeze and recover once it returns, rather than
getting a timeout error and possibly becoming confused.

If you don't like this behavior, mount with 'soft' and/or 'intr'
options--see the manpage.

That's all well and good that the process won't get an error back, but imho, 
a process should *NEVER* be beyond the reach of a SIGKILL.  I mean, an 
unkillable process prevents a clean shutdown, doesn't it?  ( can't kill the 
process, can't unmount the filesystem ).

D state has always meant unkillable.  If you don't like it, you now
know how to change it.

Timeouts are a completely separate issue, surely? Applications ought to be 
able to deal with getting a _signal_ during a system call, whatever happens.

IMO, sleeping in state TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE in any situation where you can't
prove that the wakeup _will_ happen and will happen _soon_ should be
considered a bug - it's almost always just because someone hasn't bothered
to implement the cleanup code required for dealing with being interrupted.

/me tries to work out why anyone would ever want filesystem accesses to be 
uninterruptible.

Waiting uninterruptibly on a local device is somewhat saner than waiting
uninterruptibly on a network server. If you ignore the cases where we end up
in D state waiting for a removable medium which has been removed, of course.

These days, disk technology is sufficiently complex that the cop-out of 
saying "nothing will ever go wrong, let's not bother to implement the 
cleanup code" is probably no longer appropriate even there.

generic_file_read does wait_on_page, which sleeps uninteruptibly. This
shouldn't be too difficult to change (once the pages are linked to file's
memory_area, generic_read_file redoes readpage on the same pages and it's
up to readpage to find out, weather the request is still pending or timed
out)

Other problem is the RPC layer. If it should check signal_pending only on
timeouts, it;s simple. If it should also check while waiting, it has to be
able to recognise the interupted call. And this in turn brings the problem
of discarding data requested by interupted and not restarted calls (eg. when
the process was killed by the signal). There is the nasty case when request
is sent to the server and sending process dies while waitig. But the request
is eventualy replied and the reply must be handled somewhere.

You are right about not bothering with cleanup code. But it's not easy to
have the RPC layer right.

Sound Blaster Live - OSS or Not?

Hi!

I have a Sound Blaster Live! PCI that works pretty fine for me. 

I tried to run loki's Quake 3 Arena for Linux, and after several tries, I 
started to read the README file, and it said that Sound Blaster Live does not 
work as OSS. I found a reference to www.opensound.com, where they sell OSS 
drivers for Sound Blaster Live for $35.00 !! That's too much money for a 
sound driver! I've downloaded a trial, and it really worked to play Quake.

My question is: If the 2.4.9 kernel has support for Sound Blaster Live, why I 
have to pay for a damn non-GPL driver? Why it does not work to play games on 
linux?

Because ALSA is not in the kernel tree. ALSA is a completely different
sound system from OSS, and ALSA is not in the tree. Many find ALSA
superior, and suggest it replace OSS. ALSA may find its way into the
tree during 2.5.

Of note, I don't know why SBLive does not work w/o these drivers. SBLive
in the kernel tree is very functional, and the OSS version should work
fine (assuming the game works with OSS).

I'm also experiencing problems with Q3A and SB Live! It worked fine for
me before 2.4.9, but now with the "new" emu10k1 drivers it segfaults.

I already reported this earlier when 2.4.8-ac tree included the new
emu10k1 drivers but nothing came of it. Then Alan Cox reverted the drivers
and it worked fine. Now with 2.4.9 it segaults again.

I'll have to give the alsa drivers a try I guess.

sound support is hard... The folks at 4-front have the benefit of a
liscense from the vendor for their intelectual property property used in
the driver... That has two implications, The code is proprietary, and the
vendor must be paid... I don't imagine they're getting rich in the
business but if you have a card that has a chipset that is supported well
by them and poorly by the various other sound initiatives, you have to
decide wether it's worth it or not.

In any case your card is fairly well supported by the alsa-project... so
I'd recomend trying the alsa drivers

I have been using the sblive kernel drivers for a year and have not had any 
problems with quake3.  the driver in 2.4.9 works well for me except my mic 
doesn't' want to work.

Some persons are reporting problems with Q3 (which mmap's /dev/dsp)
and the latest emu10k1 driver. Others (like me) don't see any problems.
Under investigation.

What Q3 version are you using?
Can you send me a strace of the Q3 startup?

The driver definetely follows the OSS specification. If a problem was
found at Loki then it would be nice to have a detailed bug report...

I really don't know how to make this work properly, since the only way I got 
Q3 to work with my SBLive was using the commercial OSS from opensound.com. 
The OSS/Free and the Alsa Project just give me the same output:

(v1.11). Since there are people successfully running Q3 can you try to

This indicates a problem with quake not the sound driver. Two totally
diferent drivers with the same problem...(when they are known to work
for other users)
