I just switched up to 2.4.10 on my Sony Vaio N505VX. In the boot
messages, I see near the top:
Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- reenabling.
Could not enable APIC!
/proc/interrupts shows XT-PIC for all the interrupts. This was not the
case before. Of course, I'm seeing other weirdness which is related
(the YMFPCI based sound card won't reset on reboot without shutting down
completely).
Anyone have any ideas why this is? The APIC stuff was getting detected
fine in 2.4.7.
I'm going to try 2.4.9-ac16 soon (I was going to anyway), but that may
not happen for a few days. I'll post more if I figure out what
happened. I'll also start backing down to 2.4.9 and will try that, too.
Thanks,
Sujal

Please elaborate: What does "This" in "This was not the case before."
refer to? The "Could not enable APIC!" boot message or the XT-PIC in
/proc/interrupts?
2.4.10 merged code from 2.4-ac which (in some .configs) will attempt
to enable the CPU's local APIC. The boot message above is printed if
your CPU doesn't have one.

Can you send me your .configs and boot logs for both 2.4.7 and 2.4.10?
I don't think there is an actual problem, but I'd like to make sure.

I have a Vaio Z600TEK (Same CPU iirc as above Vaio), and also get
that message. The thing is, I'm not entirely sure the mobile P3 has
a fully working APIC.
When I tried to get oprofile to work on it, I eventually gave up,
as reading certain registers returned nonsense. Some seem ok, but
others (like the version field return -1).
regards,
Dave.

I'm just dumb. The message was new, but the behavior (non-APIC
interrupts) was not. I'm truly sorry for any confusion.
I was trying to track down another problem (the PNPBios issue that looks
to have been patched and an ALSA driver issue) when I just saw the
message, which I had never seen before.
Sorry.
