Please do. Also show the output of ifconfig before and after trying to ping
some hosts.

The kernel did not even try to send anything out to eth0. Can you check your
routing? In other words, do you even have a route pointing to 192.168.0.1?

Ok, the system is a Duron 1GHz on an ECS Motherboard with the SiS 730S
Chipset. 384 MB PC133, with a realtek 8139 based Nic.
heres the .config

network works fine if I boot the old(2.2.20) kernel but booting 2.4.19-pre8
causes me to have no network connection, But the device is configured
properly. (I Think)
I can also send my dmesg if it will help

I also noticed that when booting, the 2.2.20 kernel identifies media type
100MBit Full duplex, and under 2.4.19-pre8 it detects 10MBit half duplex.,
if that makes a difference

Your CDROM drive doesn't play well with your hard drive with 2.4 kernels.
2.4 enables UDMA (which 2.2 doesn't) for your hard drive transfers and CRC
errors show up.

When your network will be sorted out, I'd be interested by the result of the
following commands after the above errors and channel reset:

hdparm /dev/hda
hdparm -i /dev/hda
hdparm /dev/hdb
hdparm -i /dev/hdb

Then put your CDROM drive on the secondary channel with your DVD and see if the
error messages go away or focus on the DVDROM drive instead.

Can you check with tcpdump if the kernel *thinks* it is sending something?

Oh, regarding tcpdump, make sure you use 'tcpdump -n', otherwise the reverse
lookup might block your output!

Yes, it works at 10Mbit. But the driver doesn't do speed negociation, it
doesn't even see the MII registers. However I think RTL8139 cards have
MII registers. I quickly looked at the source but didn't see anything
special.

How do you do this ? Mine only accepts 10Mbits ...
I tried with mii-diad and with rtl8139-diag.
rtl8139-diag shows "internal MII-compatible registers", then "Link
Partner Ability register 0x40a1" (seems what I want), but then "I'm
advertising 0000" and "Link partner capability is 0000".
I'm lost.

I'll have a hard time using a dos util on my machines (linux-only, not
even a floppy drive). Do you know where I can find these utils ?

Becker's diag utils say there is *no* MII in RTL8139, just something vaguely
resembling that. I have trouble persuading 8139 to work in 100mbit fdx,
it insists on half duplex. :-(

Tried too, rtl8139-diag set my nic to 10mbit and I could not boot
with NFS root anymore. 8-]. Brought DOS-based conf utility and
used it.

Donald Becker's utils, while definitely useful, aren't very pretty.
For example, one needs to read source to learn switches.
Are they maintained?

Why your IP address doesn't show up above? Is this intentional?
What about the other rtl8139 card reported at irq 11? Is it working?
