I have an Intel SAI2 with 2 P3 1.0Ghz CPUs installed. BIOS is up to
date and recognizes both CPUs. I installed RHEL4 which comes with
2.6.9-11 and, while it seems to recognize both CPUs, I get an error
saying "CPU #0 not responding. Cannot use it". I tried 2.6.10, 11 and
12 with the same bad luck. For kicks, I tried 2.4.29 and it recognizes
both CPUs. Googling and searching the kernel archives revelaed a few
others with this same problem but no solutions. I tried disabling HUGE
memory support (PAE). Tried noapic and force=acpi (together and
separately). If anyone has some suggestions on how to resolve this
issue, I would appreciate it.
Jim
Attached is the output of dmesg and cpuinfo for 2.6.12 .

All I can suggest is acpi=force, unless this was a typo, in which
case, sorry for wasting your time.

I've not used SMP systems much, but AFAIK, power management is not
supported. (Though, I guess ACPI is used for stuff other than power
savings.) Maybe acpi=off?
(I'm stabbing in the dark, now. Watch out.)

a) Power Management is available on SMP, though support for it is a bit less
wide-spread than it is for UP
b) ACPI stands for Advanced _Configuration_ and Powermanagement Interface.
For SMP and especially SMT (e.g. HyperThreading) on x86, it is essential
for proper system set-up.

Just want everyone to know that acpi=off seemed to do the trick. Not
sure why but dmesg still reports that it is using ACPI default. There
are no options in the BIOS for APM, btw.
So, what did we accomplish by setting acpi=off if the kernel seemed to
use it anyway? Does acpi=off inform the kernel that acpi isn't offered
by the bios? T
Attached is the new dmesg:

Uh, wasn't there a small, nice patch implementing this in bk-acpi a few
weeks ago?
*clicketyclick* Oh yes,
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4401
states it was merged into bk-acpi-test on 2005-04-22. However, I can't find
it in current -mm any more...

You're probably talking about the amd768 module. I could use it, but I
never got it working correctly, there is no actual power reduction. It
may have to do with the fast (1000 Hz) 2.6 clock though, making it sleep
in C2/C3 for only very short intervals. Also the selection for idle
CPU's seems to be too simple.

No, I'm not. I'm talking about plain ACPI C-States.

The ACPI C-State selection algorithm needs a major overhaul, that's true.

OK, in that case, good!

The current C-state selection (as used on e.g. my laptop) is good enough
for me. It was the idle selection of the amd768 module that was ehrm...
suboptimal.
I am holding my breath here ;-) (and watching the -mm commits).
