ide-cdrom / atapi burning bug - 2.6.1

Hi,
After replacing my 2.4.22  with a 2.6.1 kernel I tried ATAPI cd burning.
This totally fails. Most of the CD's are corrupt and my system totally
locks up when erasing an cdrw (reset button was the option I needed to
reboot my system) . k3b reports cd is completely burned but fails are
not identical or totally unreadable. I tried it both with an tainted
(nvidia) and an untainted (nv) kernel: same results. With ide-scsi
burning in 2.4.x I had no problems. 

Software:
Distro: gentoo
Kernel: 2.6.1 stock 
cdrtools: 2.01_alpha25
cdrdao: 1.1.7-r3
k3b: 0.10.3

Hardware
Cpu: Athlon XP 1700+ (palomino)
Mobo: ASUS A7V333 (kt333) 
Ide interface: VIA Technologies, In VT82C586/B/686A/B PI (rev 6).

Did you use DMA in 2.4 as well? Does 2.6 work if you turn it off? It's
most likely an issue with your via adapter.

I used DMA in 2.4.

I tried without dma on but it still totally locks my system while
erasing an rw.

Do you really have an SMP box, or are you just using an SMP kernel? If
you have SMP, it would be interesting to enable the nmi watchdog (if it
works on your system).

Are you using preempt?

Its just an smp kernel. I only have one cpu.

Preempt is enabled in kernel

Could you try disabling preempt?

I don't have an RW, but when my cdrom fixates, it stalls everything 
while it's fixating.  I have an nForce chipset.  (2.6.x)

Does "everything" mean everything on that ide channel? If so, then
that's a hardware limitation.

My IBM A31p (Intel 845 chipset) had a similar problem with the CD
burner. Using the '-immed' flag resolved the issue for me.

immed will help, because it causes the command to 'release' in as close
a sense to the word as ide allows. I'm not sure if error handling works
correctly in that case?

I have seen the problem as well.

It is not just processes using the IDE.  Everything will pause for a
second or two. (Which causes grief with streaming audio running at the
same time.)

Even more annoying is that it does not always occur. I have not tried
tracking down where the kernel is getting hung up at that moment since
it has been fairly intermittent for me.

One process can easily stall the other, if they end up waiting on some
resource. Might not always happen, but easily can.

There's not much you can do about it - you may want to try -immed as
mentioned earlier in this thread.
