Long boot delay with 2.6 on Tyan S2464 Dual Athlon

When booting 2.6 on a Tyan S2464 dual Athlon, the kernel pauses
for about two minutes before the first boot message appears.
This does not occur with 2.4 kernels.

The machine has a Matrox G450 AGP (which overrides the onboard ATI),
a 3ware 7500 RAID controller, IDE on the motherboard, and 1GB of RAM.

I've tried numerous option combinations in both the BIOS and the
kernel: MPS 1.1/1.4, (no-)SMP, acpi=off, pci=noacpi, noapic, nolapic,
nousb, etc.

This happens with all of the following:
	
	Fedora Core Test 3 boot kernel
	Arjan's latest kernel RPMS (2.6.5-1.356)
	2.6.6
	2.6.6-mm1

if you slap an IDE drive on this box and disable the SCSI does the delay
go away?

Yes, 2.14 from the Tyan site, released a a few weeks ago.

The box is all IDE; the above messages are from the 3ware controller,
which emulates a SCSI device.

There is nothing hanging on the on-board Adaptec SCSI controller.
The BIOS doesn't provide a setting to disable it, though I think
there is a jumper on the motherboard.

Unfortunately, I have to slap this box into production later today,
so I can't experiment much more.  But we have a half-dozen of these
motherboards in the office running Solaris 8 or FC1, and those are
slated for eventual upgrade to a 2.6 kernel, so I'll try to take one
out of production for a bit of experimentation.

Can you try adding earlyprintk=vga?  That might help identify where it got
stuck.

My original mail included the boot log of 2.6.6-mm1 with earlyprintk=vga.

Just to clarify: GRUB prints its message indicating the kernel and initrd
load addresses, and then I don't see the kernel banner,

for two minutes (exactly, or very close).  I was hoping that someone could
point me in the direction of some timer that might be popping after two minutes.
Perhaps the two minute wait is just a red herring.

In any case, that machine had to be pressed into service.  I'll try to reproduce
on another Tyan mobo, and step it in the kernel debugger.  And perhaps I'll give
LinuxBIOS a try with 2.6, to see whether it is BIOS-specific.
