I have a laptop running Slackware64 13.37. With 3.1rc2, rc5, and rc6, the display stays dark when the lid is reopened.
The display is restored correctly with 3.0.2 and 3.0.3. I'm using KDE 4.5.5. I attached scripts to the brightness function
keys which allow me to adjust the brightness manually, which revealed another regression: the password dialog to unlock
the screen does not appear until I switch to the text console and back to my X session.

I have a laptop running Slackware64 13.37. With 3.1rc2, rc5, rc6, and rc7 the display stays dark when the lid is reopened.
The display is restored correctly with 3.0.2 and 3.0.3. I'm using KDE 4.5.5. I attached scripts to the brightness function
keys which allow me to adjust the brightness manually, which revealed another regression: the password dialog to unlock
the screen does not appear until I switch to the text console and back to my X session.

If you can, please send along a kernel log with drm.debug=5 and the
output of intel_reg_dumper run when the screen is working and when it is
black -- you'll need to use ssh from another computer to capture the
latter.
intel_reg_dumper can be found at:

I suspect you're hitting some of the backlight changes. Hard to believe
that something as simple as a light could be so complicated...

Thanks for the info, will do this early next week.
One good thing about the 3.1 kernels is that I now have the /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight directory
in addition to /sys/class/backlight/dell_backlight. With intel_backlight, I can control the LCD brightness;
dell_backlight never worked, neither in 3.0 or 3.1.

Can you tell if the screen is blank with the backlight on, or is the
screen drawn correctly and the backlight off?
If the screen is blank but the backlight is on, then you may want a
patch which is on my drm-intel-fixes branch.

Result with 3.0.x: password dialog appears. This is the correct result.
Result with git://anongit.freedesktop.org/~keithp/linux: screen is dark.
Manually adjusting the brightness reveals a functioning mouse cursor, but
no password dialog. Switching to a text console and back to the X session
reveals the dialog.
Result with 3.1rc7 with aaa6fd2a004147bf32fce05720938236de3361d9 reverted:

Are yo using the drm-intel-fixes branch there? That's the one with the
FBC disable stuff.
Alternatively, you can just disable FBC manually by adding the kernel
argument:
i915.i915_enable_fbc=0

PEBKAC. I must have booted another kernel. With your branch, I see the
password dialog when I manually adjust the brightness. It is no longer
necessary to switch to the text console.

Putting printk's in ./drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_panel.c showed that intel_get_brightness was being called after
the panel was disabled, which caused a 0 to be saved as the value to restore the brightness. intel_panel_disable_backlight
merely sets the brightness to 0. Commenting out this call allows the correct brightness value to be saved.

At the request of Kamal Mostafa, an Ubuntu kernel developer, I am resubmitting this patch which fixes my backlight issue.
It seem that there are a number of people with different machines that have this problem:

The goal here is to either get the patch included, or provoke a discussion of the issue.
This patch is against 3.1 rc8 with Keith Packard's drm-intel-fixes merged in.
Putting printk's in ./drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_panel.c showed that intel_get_brightness was being called after
the panel was disabled, which caused a 0 to be saved as the value to restore the brightness. intel_panel_disable_backlight
merely sets the brightness to 0. Commenting out this call allows the correct brightness value to be saved.

drm/i915/panel: Always record the backlight level again (but cleverly)
The commit 47356eb67285014527a5ab87543ba1fae3d1e10a introduced a
mechanism to record the backlight level only at disabling time, but it
also introduced a regression. Since intel_lvds_enable() may be called
without disabling (e.g. intel_lvds_commit() calls it unconditionally),
the backlight gets back to the last recorded value. For example, this
happens when you dim the backlight, close the lid and open the lid,
then the backlight suddenly goes to the brightest.
This patch fixes the bug by recording the backlight level always
when changed via intel_panel_set_backlight(). And,

That patch (f52c619a) does not fix the problem on my Dell Studio 1558.
Alex's proposed patch -- removing the intel_panel_set_backlight(dev, 0)
call from intel_panel_disable_backlight -- does fix the problem
completely for me.
Please forgive the silly question, but why does
intel_panel_disable_backlight even want to set the brightness to 0
anyway?... Its only caller is just about to turn off power to the
panel.
Is that call to intel_panel_{,actually_}set_backlight(dev, 0) really
necessary or useful on *any* systems?
