Well, at least a bugzilla entry makes it impossible for the information
to be lost, so IMHO unless you get a patch right away, it is a good idea
to open one.

I noticed a similar issue on 2.6.22 and 2.6.24 kernels: with ACPI
disabled Linux' clock jumps backward and forward early during boot.

With this issue you're seeing is only the printk timestamps jumping
back, correct?
For example, you're not seeing the output from gettimeofday() or the
actual jiffies value (as seen from maybe a driver) jump backward? Is
that right?
The printk timestamps may jump around a bit at bootup, especially if
you have unsynced TSCs, so that is a known issue. However its not
known to have any actual negative effect other then maybe causing the
dmesg log to be a bit confusing.

in dmesg, but they look smaller and jump in both directions. And I have never seen this before
2.6.25.
It actually might be a good idea to get the dmesg output from 2.6.24.

That's odd indeed. Is HPET not registered at all in 2.6.25 or does it just happen late ?

I see the same output for >=2.6.25 , TSC calibrated against PM_TIMER and not against HPET anymore.

a) the dmesg timestamps jumping back and forth
b) the values are much to small and have absolutely no relation to "seconds after bootup", as they have with 2.6.24 and before.
But you are right, it might not be a jiffie problem, but a "dmesg timestamp" thing.

Hrmm.. So the issue persisting over the lifetime of the kernel is a new
one by me. This may also have some effect in scheduling decisions (not
necessarily causing a correctness issue, but a performance one). Also it
may have some effect on thread cputime values.
Please do open a bug and provide example dmesg output. I'll try to tag
some folks who have access to the same system type.

So on 2.6.24 the TSC is declared unstable at some point and 2.6.25
thinks it works fine. Is this the same kernel config (aside of the 24/25 fuzz) ?

I had a problem with my P4's tsc being declared unstable after S2R. I
carry this patchlet (it's in mainline) in my 2.6.24 kernels to keep the
TSC operational. (browsing, dunno if it's the same problem, but it
might be..)

Between 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 there was some patching in "kernel/printk.c". Especially this is interesting:

Where "prink_clock()" basically translates into "sched_clock()" in 2.6.24. If I change the 2.6.25 version to directly call "sched_clock()", the timestamps are back to the expected values and are no longer jumping back and forth. So, something in "cpu_clock()" is fishy.
