I think that depends on the player, not on the driver. The usual players only
take into account the front channels (gtcd, for example). If you use
alsaplayer to play both mp3 and CDs, the sound goes to four chans even with
CDs (but because alsaplayer is written to send the same signal to front
and rear channels).
I have been looking for a way to say to the mixer to "always mirror front
output on rear", but the mixers for emu10k are a real pain. The one that
shows all the channels, fails with the names. No one show all the features
of the chip. I even don't understand why it shows four channels in the
Main volume and 2 more for the rear.
I am thinkin of writing my own SBLive mixer for alsa, but I have found no
good description of the mixer and all the features it is supposed to have.
