* 2.4.[01] and duron - unresolved symbol _mmx_memcpy

Hi everybody,

Some time ago I tried 2.4.0 compiled with option for duron-processors,
yesterday I tried 2.4.1; both give problems on insmod/modprobe with some
modules, eg. tulip.

The offending function is _mmx_memcpy, which can be found in the System.map
(but, opposed to other functions, with an upper "T" instead of "t").

/proc/cpuinfo says that I have mmx, 3dnow and so on, but there seems to be
a problem getting _mmx_memcpy it into the bzlilo-target.

I saw that CONFIG_X86_HAS_3DNOW is set in include/config/x86/use/3dnow.h,
so I thought that the #defines should be ok.

So, is this already solved (couldn't find it on linux24.sourceforge.net),
is it known? should I do some more investigation?

Regards,

Phil

I need the output from these commands on a running 2.4.x kernel
compiled for duron.

grep _mmx_memcpy /proc/ksyms
strings -a `/sbin/modprobe -l '*tulip*'` | grep _mmx_memcpy

I had the same problem after I accidentally compiled the kernel with
SMP support. make mrproper did help. (safe your .config before trying it)

Short version: it's caused by CONFIG_MODVERSIONS=y.
see the logs on the end.
If I turn it off and compile again, it works.

But: in isa-pnp there is another undefined symbol!
I even deleted drivers/pnp/isa-pnp*.o and made modules -
didn't work.

thanks everybody!

###

BTW:

while compiling, I found several warnings:
fib_semantics.c: warning: indirect lcall without "*"
in lines 765, 850, 937, 976, 1008, 1040,1071, 1100, 1129, 1410, 1520

and the modules dependencies are not all set!
make modules_install does not check for modules compilation - says "cp: file not found". I think that's because modules_install doesn't depend on the modules

After changing CONFIG_MODVERSIONS=n:

make -j 2 bzlilo modules
make modules_install

reboot

grep _mmx_memcpy /proc/ksyms
	c01a4e20 _mmx_memcpy

strings -a `modprobe -l "*floppy*"` | grep _mmx
	_mmx_memcpy

modprobe floppy works
modprobe tulip works

Correct. The current recursive makefile design means it is difficult
to get a definitive list of modules without excessive overhead. So
modules_install assumes that you have compiled the modules already and
lets the 'cp' command fail. The 2.5 Makefile redesign will get this
right.

Broken 2.4 makefile design. http://www.tux.org/lkml/#s8-8
The 2.5 makefile redesign will kill this problem once and for all.
