Hello,
I have a webcam model creative webcam III. I read from it every minute. After
about 30 minutes the module ov511 cannot be unloaded anymore, stopped working
(of course, only black pictures are delivered) and there are no error messages
what so ever. This can only be resolved by rebooting. Any hints?
Used kernel 2.4.13-pre5.
Used to work with 2.4.10.
Regards,
Stephan

I've experienced some problems with the kernel version for quite a while,
(pictures with strange colours etc), but the version on the authors
webpage at http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/ is working for me fine.
You may want to give it a try and see if it fixes your problems too.
regards,
Dave.

Sorry, tested but does not work either. It even hangs the system sometimes. Of
course it did with former kernels. Any other ideas?

Stephan

Remind me, what kernel version was this ? Until 2.4.12 iirc usb-uhci had
problems with ov511. Using the alternative uhci driver may also be
something worth trying. Other than that, I'm out of ideas. USB gurus ?
regards,
Dave.

Hi,
The OV511 module in the kernel, is unfortunately, extremely old. You
should use the updated modules from (alpha.dyndns.org/ov511).

I am currently testing the latest version.
Only one question about the topic:
why is the latest driver not included in the kernel-tree? It seems not
very useful to include a currently broken driver at all. Can somebody
give a hint to the maintainer, is he listening?
This seems to be a more global topic after all: I found out that the
current kernel-driver for rocket serial cards is broken, too. It
doesn't even recognise the pci cards (the pci code in it does not
work).
Of course there is a working driver available at Control Inc. Why is
it not included in the kernel? The one included is coming right from
the stone-age.
Is there anybody actively checking the drivers for availability of new
versions? We obviously cannot trust on the authors themselves to
commit them, may not be their fault or even job. Who is to do that in
current maintaining actions? Linus, can you comment?
Regards,
Stephan

It's up to the driver's authors to push updates through the proper
channels to keep the in kernel versions up to date.
In this case, go pester mmcclell@bigfoot.com to get him to send in a
patch to the USB maintainer.
thanks,
