I replaced the kernel with stock 2.4.14 and get similar errors.

Please advise.

I have the same problems with 2.4.14-xfs as well. I didn't think
it had much to do with xfs though. Now I'm pretty sure.

Was it with a very large partition/filesystem?  (Mine is about 70 gig.)
