got this either unplugging and plugging my usb printer from the hub, or
turning it on and off (don't remember the exact timing).

Were you sending data to the printer at the time?

And does this also happen on 2.5.6-pre2?

There was a print job spooled in CUPS at the time, so I assume it was
trying to talk to it in some way.  I'll have to let you know about
2.5.6-pre2 (or some later version) in about a week, as that machine is
in my dorm turned off for spring break this week.
