I decided to see if this was due to gcc-3.2 being used rather than gcc 2.9*, and I do not think it is. I configured the kernel and build it under RH9 which uses gcc 3.2.2. Then I booted into RH7.3 did a make clean and a make (RH's gcc 2.96).
