Ok, with some advice, I reorganized to...
hda is a WDC AC28400R - reiserfs
hdb is a Maxtor 93652U8 - reiserfs
.
hdf is a Maxtor 4D060H3 - reiserfs
hdg is a Maxtor 4D060H3 (just installed today, likely used) - xfs
.
hdh is a WDC WD200BB-32BSA0 - reiserfs

now instead of deadlocks, I got an oops. which is attached, as is the 
syslog.
