When passing "nosmp" to the kernel commandline, the system boots up normally and works fine using that kernel. I previously tested with 2.6.2-rc2 and 2.6.1, but all failed so far; as I haven't found an articel on this problem on lkml earlier, I'm summing up my points in this posting. The system itself is somehow "out of support" from Compaq's point of view, but running its latest BIOS release (P17 (12/18/2002)); the host is running with 2.4 kernels for years now; maybe it's a strange bug where the BIOS forgets to setup something correctly and this didn't show up with 2.4, but however it manages to show up on the 2.6 series now. As the part which triggers BUG() (arch/i386/kernel/smpboot.c:1012) is related to APIC initialization, I'm quoting the full bootup log with all APIC information. Right before the trace occurs, the system notices 'weird, boot CPU (#15) not listed by the BIOS', so it may be related to some BIOS issue. However, as 2.4 manages to setup both CPUs correctly, this shouldn't be a problem for 2.6 :) Please cc: replies, as I'm not a regular subscriber of lkml. ---cut Linux version 2.6.3-rc2 (root@ista) (gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)) #1 SMP Wed Feb 11 14:12:14 CET 2004 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009f800 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000004fffc000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000004fffc000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000004fffc000 - 0000000050000000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec10000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fee00000 - 00000000fee10000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fff80000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) 383MB HIGHMEM available. 896MB LOWMEM available.
