this way we cannot mix filtered/nonfiltered waiters on one
wait_queue_head_t, and we have to modify both waiters and wakers.
i think we can shift this check in wait_queue_t.func:
struct wait_bit_queue {
unsigned long *flags;
int bit_nr;
wait_queue_t wait;
};
#define DEFINE_WAIT_BIT(name, _flags, _bit_nr) \
struct wait_bit_queue name = { \
.flags = _flags, \
.bit_nr = _bit_nr, \
.wait = { \
.task = current, \
.func = wake_bit_function, \
.task_list = LIST_HEAD_INIT(name.wait.task_list), \
}, \
}
int wake_bit_function(wait_queue_t *wait, unsigned mode, int sync)
{
struct wait_bit_queue *wait_bit =
container_of(wait, struct wait_bit_queue, wait);
if (test_bit(wait_bit->bit_nr, wait_bit->flags))
return 0;
return autoremove_wake_function(wait, mode, sync);
}
This way only waiters must be modified, and we can use
page_waitqueue(page) for nonfiltered wait too.
void fastcall wait_on_page_bit(struct page *page, int bit_nr)
{
wait_queue_head_t *waitqueue = page_waitqueue(page);
DEFINE_WAIT_BIT(wait, &page->flags, bit_nr);
prepare_to_wait(waitqueue, &wait.wait, TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE);
if (test_bit(bit_nr, &page->flags)) {
sync_page(page);
io_schedule();
}
finish_wait(waitqueue, &wait.wait);
}
__wait_on_buffer() can use DEFINE_WAIT_BIT(wait, &bh->b_state, BH_Lock)

i tested this idea on i386, what do you think about it?

Hello.

also, exclusive wakeups have no problems, and process
waiting in wait_on_page_writeback() won't be waken
by unlock_page(). it will be waken _only_ when that
bit will be cleared.

I'm not happy with this one. It prevents perfectly valid optimizations
that become more important with modern compilers because of s390 brokenness.
Of the options listed in the patch description (why the heck didn't it ever
make it to a mailinglist??) the options to avoid the static effect in s390
code looks most appealing but hard to implement to me, and if it doesn't
work out we'll probably have to do the STATIC_DEFINE_PER_CPU variant.

I didn't feel obligated to answer the last time since I suspected you'd
not press the issue after realizing the error.
The object isn't passed down to the wake function at all, so it can't
avoid falsely scheduling waiters on the wrong objects and/or bits.

This doesn't build for ia64 sn2_defconfig (probably not for numa in general).
One of Andi's patches, numa-api-vma-policy-hooks.patch, is missing four
#includes of linux/mempolicy.h.
I have posted an updated version of that patch on Andi's numa thread of a
month ago - cc'd to akpm.
With this updated patch, this configuration builds.

That's actually my fault most likely. The removal of mempolicy.h from sched.h
and mm.h will need adjustments in quite a few arch files.

I think you are wrong. __wake_up_common() calls wait_queue_t().func,
which is wake_bit_function(). It casts wait argument to wait_bit_queue,
and checks test_bit(wait_bit->bit_nr, wait_bit->flags) in _waker_
context, and wakes up wait->task _only_ if that bit is cleared,
so there is no false wakeups.
Oleg.

When I prepared that patch, I was certain that the bug was not s390
specific, as it now turned out to be. The reason is that only on s390, the
kernel virtual address space for builtin code is the same as the physical
address space while modules are loaded to the vmalloc area, which may be >32
bit apart.
For exported symbols, we work around this by compiling modules with -fpic,
which does not work for per_cpu relocations.
Martin was now able to do a similar workaround for these by loading the
address through inline assembly without affecting the other architectures,
following a suggestion by Richard Henderson. This is his patch:
Force the use of a 64 bit relocation to access the per_cpu__##var
variables and fix a problem in the module loader regarding GOTENT and
GOTPLTENT relocs.

I was asleep - sorry. Looks like Andrew already replied to another
query from yourself related to this, 5 or 6 hours ago, with
the proper patch - adding some #include's of linux/mempolicy.h.

Why sorry?

This patch appears to be breaking serial console for me. Reverting this
patch with patch -R makes it work again. I can't tell from the contents
of the patch why it causes problems, but it does. I'd be happy to
provide any further details if required.

Works for me too. Can you share your kernel boot commandline with us?

hm, according to the logic in there you should have seen the console
messages on tty0 because it was the last-specified. That's what happens

Well, I've been using this very command line for months, and it worked fine
before 2.6.6-rc3-mm1. Anyway, according to Documentation/serial-console.txt:
"You can specify multiple console= options on the kernel command line.
_Output_ _will_ _appear_ _on_ _all_ _of_ _them_ [emphasis mine]. The last
device will be used when you open /dev/console. So, for example:
console=ttyS1,9600 console=tty0
defines that opening /dev/console will get you the current foreground
virtual console, and kernel messages will appear on both the VGA
console and the 2nd serial port (ttyS1 or COM2) at 9600 baud."
And that's exactly what I need. So, the syntax etc. might have changed, but
shouldn't it be documented accordingly, then?

I have. It does not help. :-(
Still, reversing the Move-saved_command_line-to-init-mainc.patch _does_ help,
even with the above command line. I guess it's an x86_64-specific issue.

This patch seems to be slightly mangled; patch complains if
fs/dquot.c.orig already exists, though it doesn't seem to create such
a file in either case.

I had to back these two patches out to build for ppc:
LD .tmp_vmlinux1
arch/ppc/kernel/built-in.o(.text+0x32a2): In function `execve':
arch/ppc/kernel/entry.S: undefined reference to `errno'
arch/ppc/kernel/built-in.o(.text+0x32a6):arch/ppc/kernel/entry.S:
undefined reference to `errno'
make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Error 1
Probably just another reason to drop them. I think I'm about to
find out if I should have backed out the syscall patch too. :)

oh, and you're using x86_64 too.

I had the same problem (serial console was broken on -mm on x86_64). I
switched to i386, did 'make oldconfig', and rebuild, and it worked. I
think this was 2.6.5-mm1.
Sorry I can't test it now -- I plan on sticking with 32 bit for a while
longer.

It is all the fault of Move-saved_command_line-to-init-mainc.patch
which unfortunately has been in -mm* for some time.
It simply breaks all boot arguments on x86-64.
Just get rid of that and the console is fine. Or use mainline.

How about debugging a known problem instead of whining how your arch was
broken by a simple change required to consolidate early parameter
parsing sanely?
I suspect that the problem is caused by x86_64 not saving the
commandline correctly, and this change has merely made the bug worse.
You copy the command line to saved_command_line twice: once in head64.c
and once in setup.c. Why? In head64.c you don't terminate it, in
setup.c you do. Which is right? There are printks of
saved_command_line in head64.c and main.c, what do they say?
I don't have an x86_64 box, and I ask *again* if someone who does can
take a look at the problem...

I did that, found that your patch causes the breakage, reverted it
and it worked again. Sorry I don't have time right now to hunt
for bugs in your patches.
Frankly such cleanups are more something for 2.7 anyways, they seem
to be misplaced currently when we're all else trying to stabilize 2.6.
After all it does not fix any bugs, just adds new ones.

I am not aware of any x86-64 command line problems without your
patches.

It should be already terminated, the additional termination in
setup.c was probably just paranoia (It was inherited from i386)
The second copy could be probably dropped, but I am not touching
this code with a bargepole right now.

I would propose you defer these patches to 2.7 and then we try again.
Hopefully there will be more time then to hunt issues in all kinds
of cleanup patches.

I have an ia32e box. And when I boot 2.6.6-mm1 on it with
console=ttyS0 console=tty0
on the boot command line, stuff comes out on both the serial port and the
vacuum tube, as intended.
So either it accidentally got fixed or it's a heisenbug.
Could other people please retest?

For the record: I was surprised to see early_param() patches go into the
-mm tree during 2.6. However, the way they were done was too invasive
and introduced a third parser in the kernel. I reworked them to be
minimal and use existing parsers: this patch is 1/2 in that series.

I support that, if there's no real need for an arch-indep early_param().
