I'm seeing the same thing on a P4 box with ext3, so it's probably not filesystem related. I'm using gcc 3.4.4, binutils 2.16.90.0.3 - maybe it's yet another gcc bugpiece of crappy code in the kernel that should never have worked with another version ;)
