That's mixed code and declarations (aka Not Good (tm)).
Please do something like this instead:

-       adapter = (adapter_t *)cmd->device->host->hostdata;
+       adapter_t *adapter = (adapter_t *)cmd->device->host->hostdata;
        int rc;
