Hi!

I keep getting OOPS's when using a Bt878 TV card, I am basically unable to watch
TV for more than about 20-30mn without my system grinding to a halt. If I do not
make use of the bttv module, the system is perfectly stable. I saw the bttv
module is marked as "Orphan" in the MAINTAINERS file which is why I am writing
straight to the LKML, do not hesitate to correct me if this is wrong!

I have seen suggestions to try without PREEMPT enabled, which I will be doing
shortly. Any other suggestions to get to the bottom of this problem are most
welcome!

The OOPS on 2.6.12 goes like so:

Try without loading all those proprietary modules (vmmon, vmnet, nvidia).

You probably aren't going to get any help with this until you reproduce
the problem without the vm* binary-only drivers.

Justin.

Subject: OOPS: frequent crashes with bttv in 2.6.X series (inc. 2.6.12)

Hi!

I keep getting OOPS's when using a Bt878 TV card, I am basically unable
to watch
TV for more than about 20-30mn without my system grinding to a halt. If
I do not
make use of the bttv module, the system is perfectly stable. I saw the
bttv
module is marked as "Orphan" in the MAINTAINERS file which is why I am
writing
straight to the LKML, do not hesitate to correct me if this is wrong!

I have seen suggestions to try without PREEMPT enabled, which I will be
doing
shortly. Any other suggestions to get to the bottom of this problem are
most
welcome!

The OOPS on 2.6.12 goes like so:

Also without nvidia.

I've seen similar hehaviour (machine halts) with a BT848 on a VT82C686
board while displaying the picture on a radeon card under X.org 6.8.1.
Heavy HDD IO almost certainly caused soon death (recognizable by heavy
picture distortion), while an idle system lasted one evening. It did not
happen with kernel 2.4 and a NVidia card on XF86.

These errors were caused by memory corruption, the first four bytes of some
pages were overwritten with binary data (which affected some files in the
cache).

Now I've upgraded to X.org 6.8.2 and done a first stress-test (copying
large files from network to local HDD), and I still can post.

I have the same problem with a Bt878 on a VT82C686 board with a Radeon 7500
card.  The problem predates X.org.

I get hard hangs.

Thanks for the hint - I will try updating X.org too.

All the best,

Duncan.

Done, sorry about not doing it from the onset. I reproduced the OOPS using the
"vesa" driver of XFree86. Below is the OOPS as well as environment information:

You are very probably onto something there, the latest OOPS I sent (the 2AM one)
occurred while my daily backup script was running!

Jul  7 02:10:01 sharky /USR/SBIN/CRON[6656]: (root) CMD
(/home/save/bin/mount-wrapper bkp-section -c daily)
Jul 7 02:10:08 sharky kernel: EXT3 FS on dm-2, internal journal
Jul 7 02:11:36 sharky kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual
address 1400000c

Kind regards,
Jeremy

Jeremy,

	BTTV cards uses massive data transfer via DMA when you are watching TV,
transfering one screen every 1/30 s. Maybe you are suffering from a
trouble on your motherboard or at board physical connection.

	We don't have any other OOPS reported for BTTV cards. I believe it is
something on your hardware or software configuration that is generating
the OOPS (not a kernel trouble).

	From your lspci, you have lots of cards on it. Maybe you are
experiencing some kind of bad contact in one of them.

	In order to troubleshooting, you can:

	1) desactivate any overclocking at motherboard/video board;

	2) use a standard vanilla kernel (not a distro kernel, that may have
some experimental patches applied;

	3) use a minimum ammount of cards leaving only neccessary cards at MB.
For these, it is good to clean its contacts;

	4) Test it again.

	After doing it, please send us a report c/c video4linux list.

Mauro.

Hi Mauro,

First of all, many thanks for taking the time to reply to my email!

> We don't have any other OOPS reported for BTTV cards.

The reply from Bodo Eggert seems to indicate otherwise..

Here is some extra information as requested:

> 	1) desactivate any overclocking at motherboard/video board;

I do not use any kind of overclocking, never have done and never will!

> 2) use a standard vanilla kernel (not a distro kernel, that may have
> some experimental patches applied;

The crashes I reported were on a vanilla 2.6.12 kernel, compiled straight from
the tarball on kernel.org.

> 3) use a minimum ammount of cards leaving only neccessary cards at MB.
> For these, it is good to clean its contacts;

The only extension cards I use are:
- 1 nVidia GeForce 6800 video adapter
- 1 Pinacle PCTV card
- 1 3Com 3c905C ethernet card
- 1 SB Live! 1024 card

I regularly vacuum-clean my tower and have checked the contacts on the extension
cards on several occasions. For tests, I am willing to remove the NIC +
soundcard if you think that will help (will try over the weekend), but in the
long run I don't consider any of the above cards to be "exotic" or optional..

> 	4) Test it again.

Will do, as stated above. On a sidenote, so far I have been unable to reproduce
the problem when PREEMPT is disactivated (I stressed my box by compiling a
kernel while watching TV).

Cheers,
Jeremy

It occured again. So it wasn't that easy.

I had (have ?) similar problem with a bt878 :
if I use bttv orverlay and do disk IO (a `grep toto /usr' for example),
there quickly RISC corruption message and my log and also ext3
corruption (that's why except for recovering epg data, I don't use
anymore my card).
There were a similar report were someone and mozilla corruption when
watching tv.

When using gradisplay, I don't saw faillure, but I don't try for a long
time.

Jeremy do you use overlay or gradisplay ?

Matthieu

Dunno about Jeremy, but I'm using overlay and getting hard
hangs.

Ciao,

Bodo/Jeremy/Castet,

	It looks to be an old reported trouble with bttv cards.

	There is a doc at kernel that treats this subject. It is at:
		Documentation/video4linux/bttv/README.freeze

	Overlay works by transfering data from BTTV card directelly to Video Card.

	This looks to be problem related to DMA troubles on some motherboards.
Some chipsets (via being most prominent) have problems with DMA
transfers between two PCI cards (or PCI to AGP) that affects overlay. It
may also be related with multiple devices using DMA at the same time.

	Castet did mention, on this thread, that this is causing also disk
corruption on his machine, with is an inication that this is the case.

	Anyway, it doesn't seem to be a V4L specific issue.

Mauro.

I've found the no_overlay parameter to be promising, but it seems to be
unused by the driver:

$ grep -r no_overlay drivers/*
drivers/media/video/bttv-cards.c:static unsigned int no_overlay=-1;
drivers/media/video/bttv-cards.c:module_param(no_overlay, int, 0444);
drivers/media/video/bttv-cards.c:               if (UNSET == no_overlay) {
drivers/media/video/bttv-cards.c:                       no_overlay = 1;
$

It seems some patch has removed that feature, and I have no grepable pile
of patches here nor an idea (except for google) where I can get one.
