You might want to play with
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.15-rc5/2.6.15-rc5-mm1/broken-out/drop-pagecache.patch.
That's a fast-and-easy way of freeing up quite a lot of memory.
